Olbermann Blasts Dr. Laura: 'Genuine, Blind Ignorant Racism' (VIDEO)

Keith Olbermann blasted Dr. Laura Schlessinger Friday night — but not for her N-word rant.

Instead, Olbermann focused on "what followed the fireworks," what he described as "the genuine blind ignorant racism."

Naming Dr. Laura his "Worst Person in the World," Olbermann criticized the following comments she made:

I really thought once we had a black president, the attempt to demonize whites hating blacks would stop, but it seems to have grown. And I don't get it. Yes, I do. It's all about power.

"Translation: we elected one of you president, so stop complaining there's any racism left in this country," Olbermann said, saying her comments amounted to, "Haven't we done enough for you people?"

"Any buffoon can get on the radio and shout the N-word 11 times; that doesn't make them racist," he said. "The other part — 'I really thought that one we had a black president this would stop' — them makes them a racist."

2. Seems to me that racists think racism is natural.
Therefore, being against racism (to them) means suppressing naturally racist speech. After all, suppressing things is a regular behavioral option for right wingers.

They don't understand that racism is learned, so they misunderstand what "fighting racism" means - they assume it's always an actual fight, a power struggle between natural groups that have unalterably opposed differences and interests. This explains why they get so upset when racism is brought up - since it's "natural", and can only be combatted by suppression, to talk about it is inconsistent with what they see as the goal.

Mind you, I'm just trying to understand the way that they're thinking. I think racism is learned behavior, and can be unlearned. It needs to be discussed, and people who think it's "natural" need to be convinced otherwise. I do think that admitting unconscious racist attitudes or tendencies would be better tolerated than condemned, while unrepentant racism needs to be confronted with force of various sorts. In other words, the situation is nuanced, but I don't think wingers even see the nuance.

In the widest sense, I suppose, I'm encouraged by this statement by Dr. Laura, because it could provide a good teaching moment.

3. keith has an excellent point...
I'm glad he points out this that others did not cover.

I also thought that Ed's point on his show...that when she said "don't NAACP me"...was very telling.

Disgusting.

4. She's always been intensely self-righteous.
There's no indication that she knows anything about the history of racism in this country.

Yeah, you can privatize social security... as long as you've spent the last half a decade with no elections and killing everyone who might say something about it. Pinochet, conservative hero. Just ask Thatcher.:puke:
