But that crap is made out of oil. And better still, if it's true, then we can watch the oil companies take one in the keester for a change. And that way they won't need to drill in the oceans anymore.

...that liquefies the plastic. And what happens to the toxic elements in many plastics.

It's a fascinating concept and I've often wondered why the process isn't reversible.

6. Good points.

We can make our own gas. Save a ton of money. Create a new industry and therefore more jobs. But we end up with the chemicals used to make it into plastic. Helluva trade-off.

But if feasible it would bring some control into the use of this goop we're constantly making and putting into our bodies one way or another. And we might at least lessen the impact of this poisoning of ourselves and giving ourselves cancers and general ill-health. So there's that. I suppose that if it were used in conjunction with other clean energy generation sources like solar and geothermal, it could help reduce the cost of living and help support this crappy economic recovery thing we've got going.

- It really does comes down to: "if it does work and is cost effective, why not do it?"

8. Thats a good question of course...

it would not be cost effective at all if the process had a bad energy output ratio. But the possibility of using solar, wind, geothermal or tidal based power for one of these machines could go a long way towards making that ratio insignificant.

Time to build a ship to start mining the plastic islands floating in the oceans. Create the fuel to run the ship while producing oil that can be tanked for sail back on land.

...I've never watched that whole movie. Just bits and pieces of it. But my kids loved it when it came out so it was one of the first videos I bought for my new VCR when it came out. I never had the time for such frippery because that was during my I'm-too-busy-to-do-anything-superfluous-because-I-need-to-make-as-much-money-as-possible housing consultant/economic developer days.

Hydrocarbons all. You can make plastics out of corn, given enough energy.
