1. I'd like to start seeing some white Southern Baptists denouncing this
When can we expect to see that happen?

2. When Bush* launched the Iraq war, the Southern Baptists were the only major religious denomination
That didn't condemn it. Don't know why that stuck in my mind, but that should tell you something... :(

3. I believe the Southern Baptists outright supported the war
I think the Mormons were neutral, while all the other Catholic and Protestant denominations were in opposition.

10. I remember seeing a list, and every denomination was in opposition except for the Southern Baptists.
It sticks in my mind because I sent it to my mother. She supported Bush*. x(

4. The National Association of Evangelicals Urges Cancellation of Planned Qu’ran Burning
I hadn't heard about this until by accident recently but they made this statement a month ago: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9083311

I don't know if they're the same as white Southern Baptists but they are Evangelicals, not sure what the difference is so maybe someone can enlighten me.

6. These guys are an independent church unaffiliated with a larger -

organised body. There is a lot of that here in Florida and Gainesville is no different. Some Baptists (evangelicals - think televangelists) are connected through a larger organised body, some are more independent and some - in Australia for example - have no affiliation at all with what we know as Baptists here in the US.

Evangelicals on the other hand believe their mission is to recruit as many people into their church as possible and many are indie preachers (think Westboro cult) that are a one room, small church with no real voice in the community.

North East Florida is dominated by First Baptists (organised), then you have your standard Catholics/Lutherans etc. But many churches here are like this one in Gainesville not really connected with any other organisation - they're just jumping on "burn a Quran" with the anti-Islamic sentiment that is shared by the religious and non religious alike all through the US as the 10th Anniversary of the attacks on Sept 11 quickly approaches coupled with the Mosque/Community center "near" Ground Zero. They've been all over the news even internationally and probably raking in the money from bigots world wide.

Cheers
Sandy - who is no expert just lives near these crazy bastards.

7. SBC called it disgusting

"I think it is appalling, disgusting, and brainless," said Richard Land, director of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. "I think that those of us who find what they are doing abhorrent should say so, and say so publicly and often."

5. Where's the Republican leadership? They've helped stir up all
this Islamaphobia and hatred. These people are putting our troops at risk, and even our citizenry with this horrible behavior. Seems to me they're the traitors and enemies of the state.

8. Local police have been seen coming and going from this "church"
Edited on Tue Sep-07-10 08:50 AM by axollot
refusing to answer questions to local media regarding their presence and/or support. (leaving and entering through side doors) Not out of the ordinary to have local police participating in church services but would question the ability of any officer to do their job properly if they support this trash.

Ya know this is where we Democrats fail when framing the debate - because this DOES *NOT* Support our Troops as the RW mantra likes to pretend, yet while the RW are silent - we should be VERY LOUD about the disgusting display going on here and stick it to the Republicans that have incubated this hatred to the point of putting our troops in danger. Sadly, the Afghani people do not know that this church is some little no nothing that has no say in the US. Much like radical Muslims have no say in the greater Muslim community world wide.

It's true that the Republicans have politically painted themselves into a corner - though. And that's fantastic.

Anyone catch that there are Republicans trying to recruit homeless folks on a Green ticket to split the Democratic vote?! Now more than ever we need to stand behind our Democrats and the Independents that caucus with them. I'm as upset as anyone else here regarding *some* of the direction the Democrats have gone but *NEVER* do I think McCain and Palin would have done a better job. It would be Hoover-ville all over again today with them in control. However, I can see many Independent/Swing (even some traditional Democrats), voting for an alternative Green - and it sure would be nice to have a stronger 3rd party but not like this nor putting in puppets for the sole purpose to split the vote.
I think they are starting to really realize how badly they've damaged their party politically with their Tea-laban Party and want something to distract upset voters that wont vote for a Republican backed "Talibornagain" candidate.

Cheers
Sandy

11. "Ya know this is where we Democrats fail when framing the debate"
No truer words have ever been said. Sadly it is true for every single debate in the last 2 years. I think that the absolute, beyond pathetic, level of getting the word out on almost every issue is going to be a big part of Obama's downfall and clearly a factor in the upcoming seats we will be losing.

9. quran burning
How about some of us burning the Bible in Florida--in front of this sick "minister's" house? What a scum bag--typical Tea Party type of self-righteous sociopaths.

14. Agreed - as I mentioned up thread the Dems need to be very loud
right now framing this debate. The hate rhetoric created the vacuum for this sort of filth to become mainstreamed. It's from the right wing, it's from the Republicans and it actually *DOES* put our troops in danger.

While vile scum like this so called "pastor" doesnt deserve the attention - he's got it. If any of our Democrats had half a sense they would point it out loudly all over the media - everywhere. Not only will this help us keep seats it would help our troops when the leaders of the party in power right now let the Muslim world know this isnt *real* America - it's fringe America - worth no more than their extremists.

cheers
Sandy

15. I even saw this evil "pastor", if you can call him that, more like a
politician, as far as I could see... he was on TV today, asking "how far will we go in "giving away" our America to the Muslims?"

What a demagogue ! What a disaster for the Christian faith, that this man is anything of stature within that faith, he's a thug, a huckster, and a con man, if you ask me. Probably a racist bigot, too, if he has something against Obama.

16. I used the term loosely for the reasons you cite - I live pretty close to
Gainesville where he is located - all these indie run churches around here fit into your descriptive description! Bigots.

Guess I've lucked out on only reading about him and seeing him via the spoof DC Douglas did "monster truck rally" style.

There are a lot of people along with the "birthers" that actually believe that the Muslims (or as the father of one of my friends spells it "muslins" without realizing it) are planning some evil plot to take over America (along with us "social justice progressive Democrat liberal leftists socialist, commies" lol).
They usually call themselves Christians and have no clue as they "preach - it's against the Constitution" that they are themselves, clueless about both. It's a form of projection - you could inter-change all of their anti-Muslim rants with the word Christianity and it would fit.

Most of the "Christians" in the South are a disaster to their faith and how it is perceived by everyone else.

Cheers
Sandy
