1. There may be something to that claim.

Yesterday, there was a media debate between democratic candidates in the Manhattan primary that Rep. Carolyn Maloney holds. The moderator of that debate (both a host on the station sponsoring said debate and a columnist at a rival NYC paper) claimed that the WSJ was invited but "The Gray Lady" wasn't. My guess is that the WSJ refused to cover the debate if The Times was also invited to the event.
