"I voted for Obama, but spend hours reading complaints about him, but I'm always curious about one thing. What would America be like if McCain had won? You're a pretty creative guy, what do you think?," asks justinwasson via Formspring.

What do you think life would be like with President McCain?

5. Republicans...
Say the same about President Obama.

I like what John Stewart said to a conservative on The Daily Show. Our nation is bigger than one president. I forget the quote, but he said something along the lines of never fearing for the destruction of our country, despite disagreeing with Bush for 8 years.

I think it was with Ken Blackwell when he was promoting one of those "Obama: Destroying the Nation, One Christian at a Time!" books...

3. I'm sorry, I found that rather naive. I think this guy probably never had
a job as a teacher, firefighter, policeman, and felt the threat of layoffs.

I bet he never thought much about the value of international allies who feel respected, Republicans disrespect most "foreign" governments and do not, frankly, care about citizens of foreign countries, either.

Bush was willing to give all 700 billions of bank bailouts away without a single string attached, Democrats in Congress said, "hold on" we're not doing it all without some accountability". John McCain, at that time was going on TV saying the "fundamentals of our economy are sound"... Google for the clip. September, 08. I guess he didn't study the Great Depression, and how, for over 3.5 years the Republicans basically did NOTHING after the crash of 1929...didn't Hoover keep saying "prosperity is just around the corner"?

In fact I think things in Ohio or wherever this guy lives must be so isolated with his middle class home, his ability to travel to foreign countries, his rather naive knowledge of banking and economics, science, and equal pay for women, I guess it doesn't matter to Mr Bauer, upper middle class white guy who doesn't know many who are out of work, and have lost their home, their life savings, or can't get health insurance for their child because of a preexisting condition.

I guess he thinks dependency on foreign oil is just fine, and that there is a never-ending supply of oil right there in Alaska or Ohio or wherever. I bet he thinks basic scientific research, a women's right to choose, and arms reduction treaties are idle intellectual games.

If the courage and intellect of Obama is about equal to John McCain's brilliance in leadership, choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate, I'm really discouraged if THIS is the new youthful Democrat of today.

4. Whoa, whoa, whoa!
It's Mr. BAUR... not B-a-u-E-r...

You gave me a lot of positions I never even remotely endorsed. Just because I didn't say "I support scientific research, a woman's right to choose and arms reduction," doesn't mean I don't support those beliefs. I'll leave it at that, since you seem to be completely content with assigning positions for me.

P.S. My ability to travel to foreign countries came to fruition because of a scholarship I applied for, in order to film a documentary on Tibetans in exile within Northern India. But yeah, I'm isolated.

Cheers!

10. After November 2008, I couldn't wait for her to go away...
But she's still here! And she lost...

And thank you. President Carter has long been one of my heroes. Have you ever seen "Man From Plains?" I bought it recently and it was better than even I imagined. This man does not miss a beat... :patriot:

Welcome to DU, joebaur42! It's great to have you with us! :hi:

11. Amen!
I have! Saw it a couple of years ago. Read most of his Middle East stuff, but oddly haven't gotten to his Presidential biography that's just sitting on my bookshelf. I have the film's soundtrack, too. Love me some Palestinian rap, yo...

Funny you say that, because I've been posting videos for a while now, and I don't mean for that to sound nearly as snobby as it always does. I usually post episodes of Mildly Relevant News when I upload them on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The above is a new thing I'm trying out where fans of the show can ask me questions, and I upload answers to my second channel, Mildly Relevant Vlog (I know, so creative with the titles).

Cheers!

12. Well, I was kind of slow getting around to it, LOL, but it was well worth the wait.
I followed the controversy surrounding his book and found it baffling, since this man is a peacemaker, was more successful in brokering Middle East peace than any other U.S. president, though I also admired Clinton's efforts. However, after seeing the film, I was impressed by how well he handled it. I get irritated when people call him our best ex-president, since he was not only a peacemaker, but an innovator (solar panels on the White House!), and I think that history will rate him much higher than he is at present... :)

And I didn't mean to insult you with the welcome, LOL. I have seen and liked your videos and just now became a subscriber. When I first joined DU, in 2003 before the Iraq war, I was welcomed on my very first post. I remember how much I appreciated that, so I try to pay it forward whenever I can... :hi:

13. Agreed!
The way people get furious with him is just a sign of our partisan times. Both sides do it, painting people on "the other side" as some villain. Jimmy Carter is a villain to the Right, because he stood for pretty much everything they hate. Even the little things that you mentioned. Solar panels on The White House? HAH! But I definitely admire his work. My lifelong doctor actually did some work with him. Had nothing but nice things to say.

He's also a victim of the whole, "Anyone who isn't 110% behind Israel is an anti-semite!/All Arabs are evil!" culture. I've been studying South African modern history for a while now for a documentary project I'm working on, and many of the things the Israeli government has done is very similar to early apartheid policies. It's not anti-semitic or racist or whatever. It's just the way the government has been operating. I've always been a big fan of Chaplin's explanation of why he never became a U.S. citizen. Basically he loved both the U.S. and the UK, but was never big on nationalism, because it takes one Hitler to come to power to disregard all the goodwill a nation has earned. Carter has unfortunately became the Right's "villain" at the time for simply pointing out that the Israeli GOVERNMENT is on the wrong path and that the U.S. hasn't been strict enough with them. And as we all know, all those who criticize the U.S. are unpatriotic, tool-bags!

Diatribe over.

No worries! Didn't take it as an insult AT ALL. Little insults me, like Mr. activa8tr's essentially calling me an out of touch, upper-middle class white guy! :)

Glad you like the videos, though. Really appreciate everyone who takes the time to watch a minute of the episodes. The goal is YouTube partnership, so need all the subscribers I can get! If I can make just a wee bit of money off the show, I can justify doing cooler things, like interviews, field work, etc.

Cheers!

14. I agree with your excellent observations about Jimmy Carter, and the times
Have become frighteningly partisan, but these times began with Reagan and the "culture of fear..." As for the solar panels, they were subsequently removed under Reagan, but I read quite recently that they are going back on... Took long enough. :eyes:

As for Jimmy Carter's observations on Middle East governments, I can't imagine anyone with the effrontery to second guess him, but I remember the controversy and saw the film and they did, a knee-jerk reaction by those with an agenda who never even read his book. Carter is just calling things as they are, which is discussed on the most contentious forum on this board, but I believe that Mr. Carter is right, in both his descriptions and his terms, and he's got to be the least bigoted soul on this planet... And Charlie Chaplin had similar views about prejudice. :(

DUers do sometimes get emotional here, have to remember to address the message, not the messenger, but this week's controversy rapidly makes room for the next one. I've been here since early 2003, so have survived two national elections and a couple of wars, but I honestly don't think you'll find more informed folks anywhere on the web than we have right here on DU. ;)

And I'll definitely keep an eye out for your videos and be sure to pass them on. Keep up the good work! You'll find you're in good company. :hi:
