At this past weekend's "Rally to Restore Sanity," Jon Stewart told us that we must have been delusional these past 10 years -- that if we had only been civil and compromising the Republicans would not have filibustered issues like health care reform; They would have willingly compromised and not filibustered on issues like the extension of unemployment benefits for jobless Americans; They would have gladly given Democrats everything they wanted on issues like reforming / regulating Wall Street; Or an energy policy that is sane or global climate change. The truth is the only time Obama and the Democrats made any progress at all was when they admitted that there is no bipartisan possibility with the Republican Teabaggers who are owned and operated by Goldman Sachs, Exxon, Boeing, and McDonald Douglas.

2. To me, the whole sanity thingy was the same as telling me not to vote, not to take a stand,
not to take a side, not to make a choice, not to get involved, not to respond to the hatred and bigotry. I can't do that. I can't do that and live.

3. Papantonio is so right
Now MSNBC is toning down because of Stewart. The repukes and tea-baggers don't understand compromise. They are sadistic, the sooner we understand that, the sooner we can learn how to deal with them.
The corps. repukes on the top, the end truly justifies the means, they do not care.

10. I don't think MSNBC is going to back off too much
I think they're just looking to get rid of a few of the more cartoonish, unproductive segments.

22. Papantonio is so right
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 04:27 PM by AlbertCat
He is.

BUT

We also have the phenomenon of the press breathlessly covering every Sarah Palin fart and every time 3 teabaggers get together and ignoring things like...oh... the many intelligent and passionate speeches given by Dems in the House and Senate or... say... the Rally for Sanity.

For months now the oft repeated story from the press is Dems are gonna lose. It's been so blatantly unbalanced and obvious that it's embarrassing! I truly don't know what's gonna happen today, because I don't believe a word of what I've been told lately. And if it goes the way the press says it will, I have doubts about it. Did it really?

STILL... there is no use in pretending that people like Palin, Beck, Hannity, much less Boenher, McConnell, Jindal or Cantor are even remotely reasonable. The GOP has lost it's fucking mind.

4. I wonder if Jon Stewart would have opposed the Nuremburg trials?
Technically, Bush got away with a lot of blood on his hands. Are we just suppose to believe that there will be no consequences to our country because of his decisions?

6. Jon certainly exposed a raw nerve.
There has been no pause in the rush for these talking heads to defend themselves. Didn't they listen to what he said? Hard times not end times, sanity not insanity; civility not nasty rudeness. Stewart attempts to put something positive into the mix and the negativity flows. Jon even made fun of it last night on his show. I am disappointed but not at all surprised that the corporate media is dumping on Jon. Negativity & nastiness sells. Look how nasty/rude this forum has become. Pump up the volume! Take it to eleven!

has a clipboard and pen!

I had no idea this was Jon's message....be nice. Well, I'll be nicer when they are smarter. Until then....I continue to call a willful ignorant, a willful ignorant.

We're dealing with psychopaths like Rove, Beck, O'Reilly and other PTB lying in the background just feeding these wackos with tons of money.

The system is corrupt. The multi-nationals tell the political minions what to do. There is no democracy. And I keep trying to educate the dimwits....alas, not with much luck.

9. Stewart's unrealistic comment is best refuted by a simple look back ...
... at the August 2009 health care town halls. Sanity, reason and attempts at democratic debate on the left was answered by shouting down debate and shutting down the town halls.

And now it appears the Republicans will be rewarded for their obstructionism. Not sure what world Stewart lives in.

28. Only if you overlook the middle
Theres always a substantial center that are not enthralled by over the top rhetoric. And Keith Olbermann and Ed Schultz have been guilty in that regard (if not in content then in delivery) - even if they come from a morally superior background compared to the people they were lumped in with. I doubt those two are selling the the message to anyone who does not already believe.

If they had not been shown on the by know much debated segment, would the assesment of Stewarts message be different? I think so.

His message was not that the two sides are equally at fault - or an evaluation of the handling of facts. But that hyperbole has been moving its way in as a defacto way of communicating. Because news reporting increasingly has been tailored towards target demographics and less and less towards the news itself. Increasingly leaving a larger and larger group stranded and disenfranchised somewhere inbetween. I believe the development in registered Democrats and Republicans support this somewhat. Might be hard to see from within a progressive/democratic/DU bubble.

Stewarts message will resonate with a lot of people. And I do believe the Tea Party/Republicans will be the losers if it does. Because Democrats will always behave better. Sort of the reason most people are frequenting this website, I would assume.

11. No compromise can only lead to one thing.
Civil war.

Soon people will get so frustrated they will start taking civil action. That's why the rhetoric needs to be dialed back.

If the insane right continues on their course, I see no alternative. Over half the country will not stand for alienation from their government again.

14. We must never forget the 8 yrs of Bush/Cheney
Like a nightmare or tragedy people want to pretend the 8 years of Bush/Cheney... one disaster after another didn't happen.

We should be having war crimes and crimes against humanity trials now. Those Democrats that voted to give Bush authority to go to war are just as guilty.

"Impeachment is off the table and I want to move ahead and not look back" are the stupidest things said by Democrats, in the history of the US.

15. Wow,. did any of you actualy listen to Jon's remarks??
Why dump on a call for sanity,. I never got that he was telling anyone to dial back on the truth,. just the over the top retoric.., and I think those remarks where aimed at the insanity coming from the tea-baggers. Anyway, if you really think there is any hope left in this sick and dieing system you are still so very innocent, and I wont try to burst your bubble,. but really, if voting could change anything, they would make it illegal.

16. alot on the left are missing the point
Jon sure as shit wasn't promoting a peace rally. Jon's gotten angry himself. Keith Olbermann overreacted last night and pulled Worst Person in the World. The one thing that cheers me up all day. WPITW does not make me insane. It makes me angry yes. He's just going to prove Jon's point. I will disagree with Jon that MSNBC is not left, for the most part it's just old ratings. Cable news is a ratings game. Fox Nuts is not a ratings game. They are a right wing only ratings game. Making shit up just to keep the ratings up. Wag the Dog?? MSNBC doesn't make shit up. But it has been skewed right wing of course because the democrats control congress.

What we should have done of course is point out that Liberals control the House but Conservatives control the Senate. And will continue to control the Senate after the vote. Public in the polls (hint) are mad at the house more for whatever reason because they got more things done. the Conservative Senate sat on their ass for a year and a half. Hoping it would become a Republican Senate. Not going to happen. So if they get their House they'll look far worse. And it's not about obama because he's got a 54 % approval rating. Any Democrat who loses because they attempted to walk farther from Obama will get whats coming to them. Although I'm not dumb enough to do it. Others will punish those who didn't follow Obama. Wish we could get rid of Ben Nelson. He's a Dino saur us

If Keith continue's to ignore worst persons at the very least it should come back as maybe members on you tube creating rather good worst person video's. With something that will create a smile. Because Worst Persons isn't about getting people violent. It's about pointing out people doing dumb things. Keith's made worst persons himself. Hello!!

20. BULLSHIT or NOT?
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 04:23 PM by GreenTea
As one DUer posted...."I watched the whole Rally on Saturday and came away thinking Stewart's summation on what the rally was about was a fantastic indictment of (all) 24/7 cable media".

Republican propaganda Fox news feels they hit the jackpot with "Stewart's summation" as they will sell it as liberal crap to their hungrily hateful followers who dutifully refused to watch.

Fox news can not & will not change, simply because they are purposely a huge part of the corporate republican party machine.

However, we progressives, liberals and democrats will change!

Fox news offers much of the perfect smokescreens, lies and smears for the elitist republican corporate agenda - Fox news could lose ratings, sponsor after sponsor (as they have) and it would not matter it will make no difference to their one-sided corporate fascist approach to 'news' & propaganda.

Fox news has huge corporate money, billionaires foundations and organizations who share republican ideology, philosophy and agenda, this unlimited money will always be there to insure the elitist corporate message is well disguised and there for the masses of the uninformed to be manipulated.

It matters not one fucking bit what well meaning & gracious Jon Stewart or anyone else for that matter says....Fox will never change because they don't want to and they don't have to!

But we progressives, liberals and democrats will change, we will now be a lot 'sweeter" & nicer!

As comedian Jon Stewart's heartfelt speech informed us in a non comedic way that we are suppose to, we want to, as most here at DU seem to agree....

If doing & saying the right things in sweeter & nicer, and not so accusatory, offending way or even a more entertaining way - means it might increase the chances of progressive radio & television ratings to falter, or even if progressive media shows go off the air, at least we proved that progressives are better and more fair and more sensitive people than the republicans and their mean hateful Fox news "24/7" lies & propaganda.

And thank you Jon Stewart - We always have your great (Daily) show to inform the masses in a comedic way...for a half hour four nights a week.

The trashing will soon solely belongs to the kings & queens of trash at Fox news - and man, with glee those at Fox news are happy to have that title! No competition, nor arguments to their devastating lies attacks and distortions....(though inevitably with ratings will come other corporate Fox news clones).

But we progressives understand and have learned from the brilliant Jon Stewart's plea to tone it down not to stoop to the level of others.

"We really are better (and smarter) than that."

25. I think Stewart was maybe hoping
for something in between stomping-people-on-the-head and Teletubbies.

And my take on the sanity plea was that it was directed at cable "news" outlets and vitriolic right-wingers, not a plea for Democrats to be more wimpy.

Sounds like another crazy fear-mongering Beckster lie! If this is what someone honestly got from rally4sanity, then we are in deep doo-doo, folks.
