like after a mastectomy? or something. i mean, do i think it's ridiculous? perhaps. but it is being used as a reason to kill the unions and demonize them and teachers are all bad.

2. Excuse me, but the health benefits were part of the teachers'

pay package. Presumably they took the health benefits in lieu of pay. That's their business. I think it is stupid on the part of the teachers to prefer accepting such a big part of their pay package as coverage for cosmetic surgery. But that is their business.

People are entitled to negotiate tickets to Dodgers' games or free golf course passes or company "staff meetings" in the Bahamas. Teachers are people and should have the same right.

The question is not whether the teachers should get health insurance that pays for their cosmetic surgery (wouldn't be the only employees who get that -- judging from the faces I see on TV I suspect that some in the media also do) but how much they get paid on the whole. I will bet you anything it's not nearly as much as people in other professions with the same number of years of education -- with the exception of social workers who receive miserable pay.

I suspect that the school district or union was offered a good deal on group health insurance that happened to include cosmetic surgery. You never know, if you looked at the health insurance packages that were offered to the school district or union, you might discover that the cosmetic surgery part of the package may not have cost the school district or union that much.
