No one including Rachel Maddow seems to have noticed that we have a crazy hair trigger tea bagger for governor and a flipped house and senate. Red red red... These guys made me feel a little better

1. Maine remains a moderate to progressive state. This was a frustration vote.
Chellie killed her teabagger opponent. Mike Michaud won handily. Cutler damn near won. LePage only got 38%. Yes, they did get the legislature, but just barely in the House. Mainers are very frustrated about the economy, and the GOP did do a good job campaigning on a strong message of change and reform with very well disciplined and coordinated messaging. They also pumped in a shitload of money. But we'll see how they do. If they try to govern from the hard right, that will be rejected bigtime next time. We also have to look at reforming our early voting system which starts way too early, and we should look at a run-off system instead of a plurality system. But for those two issues, Cutler would have beaten LePUKE.

2. They'll have two uninterrrupted years...
...of applying right-wing nostrums to our problems, first. Expect a whole lot of firing...and I wouldn't want to be poor or rely on MaineCare or CubCare.

4. horrified. instant runoff is the answer. Only 38% of mainers voted for Le Bag
that means 62% DID NOT want him as our governor. Agreed with poster, Libby ran a terrible campaign- she's a good person, compassionate, but wrong candidate, wrong time. A political insider when people were demanding change. Many voters wanted to change their early absentee vote to Cutler after they realized Libby didn't have a chance and Cutler was withing striking distance. The "anyone but Le Page" votes were last minute. One negative to our early voting option. ALL major Maine newspaper editorial boards endorsed Cutler as the best choice for Maine. I wish Angus King had endorsed Cutler sooner too.

Le Bag better realize he DOES NOT HAVE A MANDATE, and walk a line or there will be a revolt in this state like never before. He also better not take credit for a nationwide economic recovery on his watch that he has nothing to do with.

I do hope he does help us shed our anti-business reputation and overly complex regulatory rules. Beyond that Le Bag, stay in your rat hole.

3. dem candidate Mitchell ran a truly crappy campaign against a strong indepedent and
the nutcase teabagger. The very 1st commercial I saw by her was a negative ad against independent Cutler. Someone told me she was behind because she was "running a clean campaign." :wtf:

I never did see an ad offering *any* vision or direction, never mind substance. Just vapid empty "family photo" type ads and negative ads against Cutler. A truly empty, shitty campaign.

The teabagger offered a nightmare vision, but I doubt (and hope and pray to the gods and goddesses) he'll be able to make any of it happen, even with the legislature behind him. They can't drill for oil off of Maine's coast. Only oil companies can do that, and there has to be enough oil to make it worth their while and it would take a long time to set it up no matter how much Mr. Teabagger tries to fast track it. Presumably the megarich living on the coast would put up some barriers. I doubt Poppy Bush wants his piece of coastline tainted by tarballs and oil slicks. We have the former CEO of Putnam on the coast in my neck off the woods. Some Rockefellers and Eisenhauers a little to my north. And then the Bah Habah old money to protect downeast and thereabouts.

The 20% she hung onto gave the election to the teabagger. Many of Cutler's votes were terrified dems and greens. Had more dems recognized she was going to lose a little sooner and jumped ship, we'd have a moderate republican running as an independent.

Maybe this will push the dems to get a stronger candidate next time around. Or maybe they'll continue to flop around like a dying fish.

Pingree is a true progressive and walked away with it. Michaud is a blue dog, but still won handily against his nutcase teabagger.

5. Maine is still a progressive state: 60% voted against him.
I agree with the assessment that Mitchell was a terrible candidate. Cutler stood out head and shoulders, and instead of being appreciated, he got hammered by the dems in negative ad after negative ad. I switched to Cutler early on after hearing him in a debate with the other candidates.

The dems deserved to lose this round. But Cutler didn't deserve to lose -- he should have been our governor.
