2. This is terrific -- thank you for posting it -- and hope that Jon Stewart watches it -- !!!
Presumably someone had a talk with Jon about not being too hard on the right wing --

As far as I know, that's why Jon is there -- to be hard on the right wing.

Are there that many rightwingers who watch Stewart that he needed to try to cover up

for them?

Bad move, Jon -- and hope that you will straighten all of this out --

Bill Maher did it for you -- score on this 1000% .... plus --

Maher is exactly right -- and Jon shouldn't ignore any the criticism --

Get on with the Mea Culpa -- and don't do it again!!

Left betrayed by the left -- really funny!

5. I agree with Maher too, but
he too need to stop inviting slime balls like Breitbart on his show and calling him a 'journalist'. That was an insult.

8. Actually, I watch Jon Stewart much less than I used to pre-Olbermann....
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 11:43 AM by defendandprotect
NOT by intention, but mainly simply because I forget to tune in --

Have often wondered whether GE did it to draw audience from Stewart --

Then, too, as Olbermann became a bit less silly after the first half hour,

Stewart seems to have gotten sillier after Bush left.

Think perhaps a reluctance to make pointed criticism of Obama and Dems --

but haven't watched enough to really know how he was handling that.

Whenever I've remember and tried to tune it -- it was less political and

more like "Animal House" -- but again, I think Jon Stewart is terrific and

simply needs to get back on track re his original concerns.

We need ALL of these shows -- though I don't also at all get Colbert's show

-- can't watch it at all. But still very well remember his speech at the

DC get together for journalists, with Bush present!

Also love Rachel -- didn't like the trip to Afghanistan much -- and hope that

this KO thing doesn't chill eveyone out.

13. To defendandprotect
Finally someone else agrees. Stewart produced some of the best videos lampooning the right that exist but he sometimes engages in false equivalence perhaps to keep a variety of guest on his show. Whatever the reason, I love this video which is now getting hard to find because someone claims copyright has been violated. I've already watched it twice.

6. Equivocation?
Edited on Sat Nov-06-10 10:49 PM by cprise
Isn't that the word for false equivalence?

BTW, I agree with Maher completely and am glad that someone prominent is finally pointing this out.

The One Nation Working Together rally on 10/2 had a much more positive message and direction... and it too was much larger than Beck's rally. It just wasn't glamorous enough and didn't give Hollywood any opportunity to talk about itself.

7. I agree with Bill Maher that there's a false equivalency,
which is why Jon Stewart and Colbert do tend to poke more fun at conservatives in general. However, I also think that Stewart doesn't see it as his job to be a political cheerleader for progressives/liberals. As for the rally, he was taking some risk there. I think he was trying to keep it from being overly political. Having watched Stewart for years now, his biggest target is the broadcast cable news media, all of which have become nothing more than infotainment with some "truthiness" thrown in. Obviously Fox is the worst.

9. Stewart
Stewart doesn't have to be a "cheerleader for the right" to not engage in false equivalence like he does often. I agree with Maher 100% here. I have been saying this about Stewart for some time but am often shouted down by other progressives since criticizing Stewart is considered blasphemy among the left. The rally was originally request of Colbert from a Reddit post as you know. It was, according to the person whose idea it was, to be a direct answer to the right and to Glenn Beck's March to Restore Honor. Then Stewart, because he is Colbert's boss, took over the idea and then homogenized the rally and filled it with his bizarre false equivalencies. Maher is right - "mainstream" Republicans do believe Obama is a socialist and worse; Mainstream Democratic candidates are not 9/11 truthers who espouse that the government caused the catastrophe. Another of Stewart's false equivalencies relates to the Haitian Earthquake earlier this year. Stewart compared a statement Maddow maid praising the efficiency of USAID under the current administration to statement with by those on the right like Robertson who said the Haitians had made a "pact with the devil". When I heard Stewart was taking over the rally's theme, I frankly lost enthusiasm for the idea even though I was one of the one's who advocated for the rally on my blog when the idea was in it's infancy. Let's us on the right stop seeing only his brilliant zings at the right and start to see how he juxtaposes their crap with what us on the left stand for.

I meant on other sites and in other forums. The reaction to anything even slightly critical of Stewart is meant with a lot of hostile language - elsewhere. I realize this is my first post here.

you regarding your statements about thinking JS has been a bit of a butt about things. Hope you love DU, many of us do. Nothing is perfect, but I rarely feel too frustrated here.

Welcome!!

15. Hostile reaction
HuffPo for one. Someone called me a "conservative twit". (I am neither) Another person told me that I didn't have a sense of humor and couldn't comprehend Stewart's message. My post are always respectful. I don't mind disagreement but people don't have to be disagreeable.

16. yes, that sounds hostile, a 'conservative twit' isn't exactly a compliment. JS is a comedian & I
don't put much stock in what he says, as opposed to Rachel, Ed, Keith, Dylan, Cenk, etc...
