Time is running out for Congress to act. Urge your representative and senators to pass the Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Accountability Act before Congress adjourns for the year.
http://dfnd.us/coFrFUThis is what I added to my letter.
Far from being over, the Deepwater Horizon disaster is still very much active. Each day brings more reports of oil, toxins from Corexit, dead or dying fish and marine life, dead or dying birds and the loss of a way of life for the people living in the Gulf region.
Oil and tar are still very much present on and in the sand and water at many of the beaches. This exposes beach goers to the risk of immediate and long term health problems.
This industry has been given many chances to literally clean up their way of operating and doing business and still has shown little desire to operate in an environmentally friendly manner.
Fines and penalties are no more than a nuisance to these corporate giants. Accidents have to be prevented from occurring in the first place. That is the only way to truly protect the environment and the various forms of life (including humans) that depend on a safe and healthy ecosystem.
Please make every effort to pass the Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Accountability Act this congress.
I wish that I could say that I'm confident that our government will put the interests of the environment and US citizens ahead of corporate influence, but.................
