On November 9th, 2010, a group of scientists at NASA's Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope announced the discovery of two bubbles of energy erupting from the center of our galaxy. The structure spans more than half of the visible sky, from the constellation Virgo to the constellation Grus, and it may be have been around for millions of years.

These bubbles extend 25,000 light years from each side of our galaxy and contain the energy equivalent of 100,000 supernovae.

1. Kind of makes
the petty squabbles we pathetic humans have seem pretty stupid. We're little more than monkeys flinging poo and romping on a tiny rock in the middle of the universe. The universe was here for 14 billion years before we got here, and it will be around for billions of years after we're gone. We are just insignificant specks in the vastness of time and space and we have a lot of hubris to think we actually matter.

2. I saw this story before but I didn't see the item about 100,000 supernovae of energy.
Wow! That is mind-boggling!

I recommend galaxyzoo.org for active participation in a survey of the millions of Hubble images. For those who want perspective on their lives, on our country, on the past and the future, and on EVERYTHING, there is nothing better than clicking on the millions of new and amazing images that humans have acquired for themselves, out of deep, deep space. You do some simple classifications of shapes and types of galaxies for the project and are privileged to SEE IT ALL. Great discussions there, too, and postings of amazing objects.

Here's my plan: Give all of the trillions of dollars now going to the Forever War to NASA and let's get going on understanding this mind-boggling place, the Universe, that we are part of. Let's accelerate it! And let's get out there! It's time. It really is time. Throw off the corporate rulers and war profiteers and do something worthy of being human!

3. Dumb question.
In the video presentation, the galaxy is spinning counterclockwise, leading with the outer edges of each dense strand of stars. Considering the configuration of the trailing spokes of the spiral, I'd expect it to be spinning clockwise.

In looking at another spiraling system, i.e., water circling a drain, the trailing ends don't lead that motion but follow it, like a comet's tail.

I'm describing this awkwardly and wish I had a couple of .gifs to illustrate, but I'm hoping you get the idea and that someone can explain this to me.

4. it would appear in the graphics that the POV is moving and not the galaxy spinning...
but, yes- the galaxy is spiraling toward the center- not outward.

10. clock wise or counter clock wise only depends on what side your looking at it from.

13. I finally figured it out.
It is circling towards the center and not away from it. The motion I thought I was seeing was just a function of camera movement (POV, as stlsaxman so tactfully put it), not galaxy movement, and I should have realized it sooner.

Sometimes I'm just a little slow. :D

6. ppppffffffttttt..
ridiculous.

Everyone knows the Earth is only 6000 years old.

Besides, I think those pictures are fake 'cause how did they get those cameras so close?? and I never seen such purty colors in the sky, neither.

hopefully, unnecessary - but you never know anymore: :sarcasm:

7. Those vapor trails are from JESUS rising into heaven!!
NASA just does not want to admit the truth! Every self respecting Christian, REAL Americans, know that science is bogus & is just out to destroy Christianity! For CHRIST SAKE they are teaching our children they came from monkeys! And we all know monkeys have no morals! Science is trying to force crap like climate change down our throats so that they can destroy Christian businesses & families with higher energy bills...GOD gave us cheap oil, coal & natural gas we don't need these atheist scientist telling us we have to change our lifestyle after all America is GOD'S chosen country! We need to cut NASA's budget & use that money to spread the word of Christ not all the stupid atheist crap like vapor from black holes!

Disclaimer: :sarcasm:

12. They used a "trick" to mask data
It can't be real. Using a "trick" in Climate Science caused "ClimateGate"

15. What trick did NASA use here?
Climategate turned out to be a big fuss over almost nothing. For example, the word "trick" does not always mean deception. If a dog can do a flip and catch a frisbee at the same time, that's a "trick." No deception is involved.

I'd like to know what trick you think was used this time by NASA.

16. sorry, forgot the sarcasm tag
They isolated and subtracted the "fog". This is very analogous to the "hide the decline" in the Climate Gate data. That was the point. There was no deception in Climate Gate data "trick", just like in this video.

14. If you ever get a chance
We went to the lava fields on the big island in Hawaii ( I think it was the Big Island) more towards the evening. Completely gone from city lights. I think it was an hour drive. Anyway, we finished at night, after spending the whole day looking down at lava flows, cause they're cool and cause you don't want to step in one, looking up made me dizzy.

It's like if you were a lens on a telescope in 360 degree view. The clarity was astonishing. Felt like I was floating in space.

Do it!

I know you want to!
