Rich people suckered Americans and the Tea Party in the recent election, and they’re trying to do it again by protecting the Bush tax cuts for the top 2%, a new ad by Democratic allies will argue.
The spot, by Americans United for Change, features a couple of fat cats chuckling over how their money was protected with help from Tea Party rubes who “bought” the arguments about cutting the deficit and creating jobs.
“That was too easy,” they chortle.
“Suuuure we’ll cut the deficit …. Right after we get our $700 billion tax cuts!” they laugh, clinking glasses over a copy of Karl Rove’s book, “Courage and Consequence,” and promising to create new jobs — in Asia.
As for cutting spending — that would be unemployment benefits.
The point, of course, is to convince lawmakers to end the top-income tax cuts, and the ad will air nationally this weekend, and on Washington-area cable at the end of the month, just before GOP leaders head for their delayed White House meeting.
“On the campaign trail, Republicans and their corporate backers paid a lot of lip service to the Tea Party crowd about reining in the deficit,” said Americans United director Tom McMahon. “But back in Washington, what’s the very first order of business? Blowing a Texas-sized hole in the deficit.”
