Princeton University professor and author Cornel West speaks with Democracy Now! about Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) being censured for ethics violations, President George W. Bush saying the worst moment of his presidency was when Kanye West called him a racist, the state of American politics, and President Obama's first two years in office. "The Obama administration seems to have very little concern for poor people and their social misery," West said.

Why Mitch McConnell is worse than Charles Rangel

Both men misused their power -- but the Senate leader gave corrupt BAE Systems $17 million in 2010 earmarks

On the same day that the House Ethics Committee convicted Rep. Charles Rangel of nearly a dozen violations of congressional rules, Sen. Mitch McConnell announced that under pressure from fellow Republicans, he will surrender his beloved earmarks. This is a notable coincidence because, like Rangel, McConnell has rewarded corporate donors to an academic center named after him -- and used earmarks for that purpose. The top corporate recipient of earmarks from the Kentucky Republican in the 2010 budget not only happens to be a donor to the McConnell Center for Political Leadership at the University of Louisville, but one of the largest and most corrupt defense contractors in the world.

Topping the list of Rangel's transgressions was the misuse of his congressional clout to raise money for a vanity academic "center" named after him at the City University of New York from private donors. Yet somehow McConnell got away with the same kind of dubious dealings at the University of Louisville -- and was allowed to reward BAE Systems, donor of $500,000 to the McConnell Center, with $17 million worth of defense earmarks.

3. Obama, in his efforts not to favor black people
and give Fox noise something real to complain about has completely ignored their problems. He did veto the bill that would have given the banks a green light to foreclose on homes illegally. It is the system, I think. How could a president live in the US and actually change the system. Our recent history , in reality , would tell US that the president would be killed. One Rep. admitted that he was told that if he did not pass TARP the country would have martial law.Whatever that means.I guess sending the military after US.

4. It was reported in the NYTimes,
and maybe elsewhere that the retired NYC Prosecutor, Robt. Morganthau, got Rangel to give his friend a big oil man some kind of financial deal, as soon as Rangel took over as the head of the House Ways and Means Committee. Morganthau and his oil magnet friend made a big windfall in profits and Rangel got the money for a part of the CCNY library to be named after him. We can be sure Rangel also profited personally from the deal.
