Former Gov. Jesse Ventura said he will no longer be forced by the TSA to prove he is not a criminal or terrorist. He refuses to be considered guilty until proven innocent by the government in violation of the Fourth Amendment. He also admitted the decision not to fly may put an end to his career.

12. He's anything but nuts
Jesse Ventura is one of the smartest, most respectable people on this planet and he is more of a patriot than are almost ANY right winger and SOME bluedog Democrats.

This is a man who served in The US Navy Underwater Demolition Team and put himself in harms way for this country. On top of that he was smart enough to see that his physique and verbal talents were able to land him a career in entertainment as a wrestler, and a good one at that, and he continued in the entertainment business with movies until he decided he'd had enough of the abuses he saw in his home state and ran and WON the Governorship. Now he has his own show and is worth millions of dollars.

Think about that for awhile............He's a good man who cares about the American people. So please make sure you have your facts straight before you start calling somerone you don't even know a nut.

Jesse's correct and you should be thankful we have his voice to speak for us as he does. He is his own man and he doesn't care if your right or left, if you're wrong, he's going to let you know it.

58. A lot of us that have served in sensitive areas of the military are upset with this.
Simply because very little thought has been put into the ramifications of these ridiculous protocols on the Morale of the citizens of the USA. Jesse, you and I have made many sacrifices in support of our country, yet, all of that is thrown away in the hopes that they may catch one in 20,000,000 "Underwear Bomber", while discarding the US Constitution, and our rights to take our own chances when we fly.

Frankly, I am willing to take a chance when I fly, because I know that I would happily attack or kill any terrorist that would have the misfortune to sit in the seat next to me. It's that simple. I don't need minimum wage, poorly educated TSA Drones tasked with busywork to make it seem like we have4 safety when in reality, there is no security.

Personally, I feel that they are trying to dismantle the Airline Industry in a manner that makes it look like blowback from these irrational search protocols. The governemnet can no longer afford to subsidize the airlines anymore, and they actually want people to stop flying.

I'm more than happy to oblige them, as I have always felt that the Airline industry was just another way to prop up the Military Industrial Complex during peacetime. Just like Fertilizers for chemical weapons.

While I think Jesse Ventura is correct for taking a stand similar to my own, I think it just may be what the Government wants. Reduce the availability of transit options from the citizens so they are all locked into their own little regions without the ability to travel abroad and see the rest of the world.

9. Nuts? Hardly.
Is it nuts to think that global warming is a hoax...in fact, a conspiracy to seize control of America, then the world? To report on an American gulag archipelago constructed on behalf of FEMA to hold dissidents in the new police state? To believe that the govt. is creating a vast underground complex (or complexes) to safely house the elite in the event of domestic disaster?

more concerned about Obama's career than about the rights of all Americans. I personally no longer care one bit about any politician, left or right, unless they have demonstrated that they represent the American people.

They have lied about these machines. They have claimed they are needed because of the underwear bomber, hoping to deceive the public again, as they did with every abuse of rights they instituted using 9/11 as a reason.

The underwear bomber was already under surveillance. He was a known threat, even according to his own father. He was allowed to get on a plane, and would have done so regardless of scanners or pat-downs. He was helped to board that plane when he never should have been near an airport. Then they jumped on the bomber as an excuse to finally get those controversial scanners sold and paid for with our tax dollars, and the terror profiteers are even more wealthy now. And I though only Republicans would lie to the people like this.

The excuse for giving him a visa was 'we did not want to interfere with an ongoing investigation into Al Queda'. Same excuse given for the 1993 bomber who was known to the intelligence community but allowed to go ahead with the plot rather than expose the investigation, or so they said.

He would never have gone through a scanner. He was escorted on to the plane. Stop buying the lies. You are helping to destory OUR rights because of YOUR fears or your concerns about a politician.

17. Right on, somebody or (bodies) helped him get on the plane
when he didn't even have a passport and was already a known security threat. The airport security people have refused to release the video from their security cameras which would have shown the man helping Mr. Underwear Bomber to bypass the security procedures.

Authorities have quietly reversed the official story behind the Christmas Day underwear bomber attack and acknowledged that an accomplice was involved, despite weeks of denial and derision of eyewitness Kurt Haskell's description of a sharp-dressed man who helped Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab board Flight 253 in Amsterdam.

Buried in the last two paragraphs of a story about alleged female suicide bombers coming from Yemen, an ABC News report contains the following bombshell.

"Federal agents also tell ABCNews.com they are attempting to identify a man who passengers said helped Abdulmutallab change planes for Detroit when he landed in Amsterdam from Lagos, Nigeria."

"Authorities had initially discounted the passenger accounts, but the agents say there is a growing belief the man have played a role to make sure Abdulmutallab "did not get cold feet."

Detroit lawyer Kurt Haskell maintained from the beginning that he saw a well-dressed Indian man aid the accused bomber to board the plane despite the fact that he had no passport and was on a terror watch list.

"While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, 'He's from Sudan and we do this all the time,'” reported the Michigan Live news website.

FBI agents interviewed Haskell and he told them about the sharp-dressed man but officials refused to admit that a wider conspiracy was at hand, stoically maintaining the official story that Abdulmutallab had acted alone. Authorities claimed that videotapes did not show a second man accompanying Abdulmutallab and yet they refused to release any footage of the alleged bomber.

31. Yes, he didn't have a passport and he was not a U.S. citizen,
he was already on their watch list, his father had warned that he was a threat and someone escorted him onto the plane.

All of which means that he would never have gone through a scanner. And right after this stupid event, Michael Chertoff was all over TV demanding that these obscene machines be installed at airports. For years civil liberties groups had managed to stop them. Chertoff did not reveal the financial stake he had in the company that makes them, the aptly named 'Rapiscan'. But after years of failure to sell them, Napolitano we now learn, appropriated millions of dollars of the Stimulus money and ordered the purchase of enough of them for 11 airports.

It all worked out beautifully once again, for Big Business and all the work of the civil rights groups was destroyed. This time by a Democratic administration who succeeded where the Republicans failed. I am sure they got a big pat on the back from 'Rapiscan'. Mission Accomplished. You would almost think God was on their side, the way things happen in their favor, every time! :eyes:

74. Rapiscan CEO accompanies Obama on his India tour.
The CEO of one of the two companies licensed to sell full body scanners to the TSA accompanied President Barack Obama to India earlier this month, a clear sign of the deep ties between Washington politicians and the companies pushing to have body scanners installed at all US airports.

Deepak Chopra, chairman and CEO of OSI Systems and no relation to the New Age spiritualist, was one of a number of CEOs who traveled with the president on his three-day trip to India, which focused primarily on expanding business ties between the US and the emerging Asian power.

"I am honored to be selected to play a role in this very important cause," Chopra said in a statement ahead of the trip. "Currently the trade between US and India is only one tenth of the amount of trade between US and China. There is substantial opportunity to improve the trade relations with India for mutual economic gain."

snip

That a manufacturer of body scanners accompanied the US president on a foreign trip shows the extent of the ties between the industry and the US government. With anger growing at the intrusive news screening procedures, many observers have focused attention on Michael Chertoff, the former Homeland Security secretary whose consultancy, the Chertoff Group, counts OSI as a client.

15. This is why I won't fly
and some of it dates WAY before this once proud Nation became a warren of scarred rabbits on September 11, 2001

1) I am not a criminal or a terrorist. If you suspect that I am, call the cops, and we can let the lawyers settle it for a big chunk of your MONEY.
2) I was born here. This is America, not pre-revolution France. I refuse to be subjected to "justice" via the "Napoleonic code" (Guilty until proven innocent.)
3) I am a human being. Laws made by men and by G-d say that I have an innate dignity that belongs equally to each and every Human being. The United Nations has also said as much.I believe, as Eleanor Roosevelt said that no one takes your dignity from you unless you let them. I will not give any government, or its representatives the opportunity to demean me as free American or as a Human being.
4)Airlines long ago began treating paying Customers like cattle. and the cattle happily pay for being mal-treated. As I observed above, I am a Human being, not a bovine one. Unless and until air carriers treat me like a valued customer rather than annoying freight, I will not fly. My self-image and self worth is not for sale at the price of a bag of peanuts.
5) The luggage I carry with me when I travel are a part of whom and what I am. Loose my bags, and you'll loose me.

This is another thing "average Americans" could change if they'd stop acting like a craven flock of pidgins set before a feral cat, but they probably won't. Benjamin Franklyn wanted the turkey as the national bird. I think nearly 230 plus years later, he's gotten his wish, for all the wrong reasons and in all the wrong ways.

It is a sad day in America when people think it is ok to give up your rights, read the God Damn constitution and please understand this document. I am sure Thomas Jefferson would of love the TSA searches, and don't give me that things are different now bullshit. Next thing, in home monitoring of your ever move. I remember when the wiretapping came about and the Bushies said if you had nothing to hide what are you worried about. It's happened in other countries. Americans have their heads in the sand too much. This is going to go on and on ... as another poster said, there is too much profit in this. Next well be buses, trains, cars, malls, etc. It will go on and on and many Americans will say they think they are more secure, meanwhile, all of their civil rights will have been eventually trashed. And then they will say WTF when it all finally sinks in ... and then it's way too late.

25. The reason why...
...Jesse Ventura, Alex Jones, and Randroids make such problems worse is they never refer to democracy or the idea that people can and should exert power over this federal agency. Airlines or private corporations adopting airport security functions would ensure even less accountability, and would accelerate the drive toward the feudalism that corporations and the wealthy desire.

Incidentally, I got TSA-groped recently and these aggressive searches are largely worthless except for pissing people off or enforcing abject obedience. Backlash against such practices is desirable, but please let's stay focused on what's important.

28. He doesn't have a real solution, by the way. I'm creeped out by the precautions, too. But...
his suggestion of having each airline handle its own security is loony. Well, unless there's some way to ensure if a terrorist blows up a plane, its debris will only fall on that private airline's property.

As usual, libertarians live in perfect ignorance of the fact that there is a public sector.

34. How about Americans stop being such cowards, so easily scared?
We are in more danger on the road driving than we are from a possible terror attack. Check out the statistics on that and it puts things in perspective.

More people die from lack of health care than any terrorist could dream of, over half a million since 9/11.

So long as people are easily manipulated and frightened, these abuses will continue, because they are very, very profitable for Big Business and won't stop until we have no freedom left at all.

Americans have to make a choice, do they want to live in constant fear, give up all their rights to try to be 100% secure, or do they value their freedom more? They are willing to take a greater risk than a terror attack when they get in their cars every day. Why is this relatively miniscule threat so frightening to them? The answer is they are being deliberately scared, for profit. Wars and the ever-growing police state are extremely profitable, but none of it has made us one bit safer, in fact it has all probably done the opposite.

I prefer the freedom to make decisions about these known threats for myself. I can think of nothing worse than living in a police state which is where we are rapidly going. Give me freedom or give me death? Whatever happened to people with that kind of toughness who didn't cower like scared kittens every time the government said 'boo'?

38. Once again you nail it sabrina 1
I thought the line "and the home of the brave" meant something. But after the post 9/11 threatdown with color coded terrorist alerts, and suggestions to duck tape your windows, government sanctioned wiretapping of citizens, the Patriot Act...etc..I don't know.

FAUX News, Rush, and all the other reich wing media nazis have managed to make a lot of Americans jump at their own shadows.

You bring up dangers of road driving, I've often thought of that analogy. If you step back and think about it, we allow high speed vehicles made of steel to rush towards each other only separated by a few feet and a painted line on the road!!! But we weigh the risks and value freedom of (quick efficient) movement over what would be a way too expensive prospect of barricading the middle of all roads everywhere.

I'd rather live in a world without the military on every corner waving machine guns, and the government listening in on my phone calls and email.... and risk the small increase to the threat of the occasional terrorist bombing.

39. Again, no actual solution is being offered here.
I agree with your critiques. But choosing not to help figure out a solution pretty much leaves the field open to those who offer bad solutions.

43. Solution to what? There is a relatively miniscule threat, far less
than those we are not asked for solutions for, like Health Care for all, or the reduction of murder, more Americans are killed by other Americans than will ever be by terrorists. This is an issue that has been blown out of all proportion for political and profitable reasons.

Terror threats are a fact of life in every country and always have been. The old methods of dealing with them worked. During the Clinton administration threats which had the potential to be far more devastating then 9/11, were stopped with little media attention. The Bojinka plot eg, which planned to use over a dozen planes was stopped because the Clinton administration, unlike the Bush administration, did not ignore threats. They paid daily attention to what their terror experts had to say. The public had they been manipulated and scared at that time, would have been living in constant fear, but people just did their jobs.

We do not need these 'enhanced' techniques etc. That part is simply greedy businesses and people like Giuliani and Chertoff et al, ghoulishly cashing in on fear, unfounded fear.

George Bush's negligence caused 9/11. Have we forgotten that already? How Richard Clark et al were pushed to the side, not allowed to give reports even when those reports told them an attack was imminent?

We need some common sense here, some perspective, and to put in place people who know what they are doing.

The underwear bomber, and there are a lot of unanswered questions about that little scenario, they sure worked for Chertoff's machines, but he was a known threat. Scanners were not needed at all in his case. The STate Dept. screwed up, or whatever, and allowed him, in fact helped him, to get on that plane despite knowing what they know about him.

The hysteria constantly being stoked by the likes of Chertoff et al, needs to stop, WE need to stop paying attention to it and accept the fact that we do the best we can to minimize threats, of all kinds, but sometimes a tragedy will happen, it is part of life, not the end of life as we know it, which is what has happened with this over-reaction to all this. And it's mostly for profit, fear is a profitable business.

33. After Lockerbie
I saw on 60 Minutes a demo of explosion resistant (proof) cargo containers. They blew up a bomb inside one and it didn't rupture.

The biggest threat is under our feet as we fly yet this refusal to use the containers and highly effective air marshalls proves that the money is flowing out the window.

I also think all TSA gropers should be gay. At least they would be objective.

40. Came to the same conclusion years ago
Indecent food (on the plane and at the airport)
Excessive fares
Crowded conditions at the airport going through security
Lack of legroom space in the seats
Disgruntled passengers for the above....etc., etc.

And planes contaminate the environment more than trains

41. Jesse doesn't wanna admit ( along with Alex Jones etc)
that the enemy was the same enemy that was lying to us throughout history- and who constantly used our ignorance and private selfishness to get us to make 'them' strong while leaving 'us' weak. And power CORRUPTS! absolutely. What is it about being defrauded that so surprises anyone? CitCerts are a fact of our future (a 'citizen certficate' or 'citcert' will one day be necessary to get a drivers lic. or fly or even go into a mall- indeed, a 'citcert' will eventually be issued at birth, implanted as a microchip... that's read by an illiterate well paid goon waving a giger counter, etc)
Fact. THe US was defeated by rightwing fascism. But along the way, lotsa tricks were played, to buy time, on the 'greatest generation' (lol) see ronald reagan! see gh bush, junyer? see obama! The USSR was the good guy, the dulles brothers and edgar hoover and the JBS/kkk/madd etc were the bad guys. Believe it or not. It don't matter. 'Can i see your papers' is what matters. Just say no! i dare ya!

44. Some very important questions to ask
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 03:56 PM by felix_numinous
Do we really want to allow private companies to do airport security, or can we change the system from within the government? Private security has not gone well for preserving our civil rights in the long run, in fact I think some private company would *love* to take over this responsibility for the government. Then we would have a whole new set of problems, IMHO.

TSA employees are on record as being as miserable with these policies as we are, their jobs are now unbearable. We are blaming the employees for a lousy procedure. If TSA employees banded with the public in one voice, we could pressure change from within.

This is a great opportunity and learning moment for everyone in this country, including all branches of the government, that although we people are not happy with government policy, it does not mean it needs the quick fix of privatization. We have to preserve these people's jobs too--let's say TSA workers are threatened with job loss unless they comply, another air traffic controller scenario could happen here. They need to be unionized, and to have a voice in all of this too. The learning moment for the citizenry is that we do not want our personal space invaded any further, and are learning to stand our own ground.

An arbitration needs to happen between all parties involved, the government is only one party, all the people of the US including TSA employees have to open up a dialog, by first demanding that all sides have a voice. This a great chance, (and is awesome symbolism when you think about it, fighting for our personal dignity!) to begin the process of gaining back our voice in crafting public policy.

I can see how privatization could go bad, with bio-chip identifications, and many other invasive procedures, and once again we'd have to deal with corporations with more civil rights and of course the endless supply of money.

If airport security becomes in the hands of the states, it could also get dicey, but perhaps this could be a plan B if the federal government will not listen.

75. Jesse Ventura is an American Hero...
because he's never afraid to exercise his First Amendment freedoms.

His "Conspiracy Theory" program is informative and entertaining. He has the courage to cover issues and subjects the mainstream media won't touch.

His JFK episode was excellent!

Jesse's no dummy -- he was a Governor, a Navy Seal, and most importantly, a body guard for the Rolling Stones!

Now he is a leading voice for civil liberties and common sense.
