1. Mine cheated on me during all my years of health problems.

Then, when I was getting better, he finally admitted it all and left me for a supposedly healthier woman who's since spent more time in the hospital than I ever have in just the last year. I'm convinced he made me sick, just from the stress of living with him all those years.

2. I knew living with a drunk was making me sicker

and I was right, I stayed out of the hospital for over a decade after I left, my deteriorating health suddenly stabilizing.

Marriage was a much better deal for him than it was for me. He's had 3 more marriages since I left.

Younger men especially don't do well when a spouse gets sick because it runs counter to that sense of entitlement the larger culture gives them.

My dad, however, was a caregiver for 3 years and didn't yell for help until my mother was totally bedridden. I was amazed he'd hung in there for so long.

3. A study done some years ago found that the happiest people in our society, at least, were:

married men and single women.

I believe it came out in the mid eighties...and I'd bet it still holds.

10. It definitely made you sicker.

I've been having some health issues lately, and it's been a bit of a surprise how much easier it is to be sick and a working single mom than it was to be sick and married to him. It's also not as bad as it would have been.

My doctor actually put it in my chart for my history saying she believes that my ex made me ill.

8. In my case the wife kicked me to the curb when I developed an illness.

When I really needed her! After 30 yrs. of marriage.

9. My sister's husband refused to use their money for her care...

even though she had a higher salary for their entire 22 year marriage. He thought that his husbandly duty was to visit her for fifteen minutes a day over his lunch hour. Needless to say she had to divorce him to make sure that she would get proper care. She moved across the country to live in special care near us and we are taking care of her. She has a family life and people who treat her like she is deserving of the air she breathes.
