Sad, but true, every time people "democratically" demand that the populace think for itself, they push voters away. Most voters want neatly packaged solutions, not conundrums they have to solve for themselves and they will accept almost any piss poor offered "solution" from someone/anyone else, before they will apply their own brains to finding one of their own.
