Brit Hume Questions Tone, Timing Of Arizona Shooting Memorial Service (VIDEO)

A panel on Fox News' "Special Report" weighed in on the memorial service held on Wednesday for the victims of the Arizona shooting. While panelists Brit Hume, Charles Krauthammer and Chris Wallace all had high praise for President Obama's speech, Hume seemed perplexed by what he called the "tone" of the event. The audience had peppered the speeches with regular applause and cheering, and this appeared to surprise Hume.

"I think the president prepared this speech in the expectation that this would be indeed a memorial service," he said. "I think it ended up being nothing of the kind. This was much more of a pep rally and perhaps that's precisely what the people of Tuscon and the people of this region needed...and wanted."

Also, he said, the event had perhaps been held "a little late...certainly the mood in that auditorium suggested the sense of mournfulness that you might have expected and sobriety you might have expected was not to be found tonight." Hume continued that the opening Native American blessing, which was given by Carlos Gonzalez, a professor at the university, was "remarkable." By the time it was over, he said, Gonzalez had "blessed the reptiles of the sea and he had prayed to the four doors of the building and while I'm sure that all has an honorable tradition with his people, it was most peculiar."

8. For once I agreed with Hume

I can't stand Hume, but in this case he was right. I was stunned with the audience behavior throughout the evening and if I had had a family member injured or killed in Tucson I would have been furious. The hooping and hollering throughout the event was completely inappropriate and I presume the audience was mostly students who had no idea of proper behavior at a memorial service.

Having said that, Obama was spectacular. You could tell at the beginning of his speech he was stunned with the audience raucous feedback and did his best to get the decorum that the occasion demanded. They finally shut up and showed some respect in the last half of his address.

I also was surprised with the accolades given him on Faux News, especially by Charles Krauthammer. Chris Wallace, of course, did everything he could to find something about Obama to criticize.

I think people needed it and wanted it. And it wasn't just students, but adults, politicians, family members, etc.

I live in AZ. Even the conservatives (really Libetarians dominate this state) at my job are grateful for Obama's speech. We all needed the sympathy and the pep rally. The air of sorrow was thick enough to cut with a knife.

feeling the love. It was very appropriate and I commend them and the people of Tucson, AZ.

Fake news always have to say something to the contrary when it comes to people who don't worship them and their deranged view points. In the eyes of the right, 1st and 2nd Ammendments are only privileged for them, ya know, the choosen ones, choosen by their GOD.

12. Have you guys ever watched College Jeopardy?

College kids yell and scream every 3 seconds and drive me crazy. College kids are rambunctious, and I personally thought it was inappropriate myself also; but we have to forgive 20 year-olds full of energy and hormones, and youthful exuberance.

I also thought the choral piece at the end was inappropriate and also sucked, I didn't like it.

But everything else was AWESOME!!!! Especially the Native American spiritual ceremony at the start. I think I will post that later.

11. I agree about the tone.

I was initially surprised at all the applause. But as the speech went on I sort of thought that just maybe this is what the people of Tucson needed. Not a sad memorial, but a joyful pep talk. And who better to deliver than President Obama. This was a speech that Bush could never have given -- the moment called for someone like Obama, and he delivered big time. It sounded like he gave the audience exactly what they desperately needed.

13. Not just during Obama, but the whole service

I felt the behavior was inappropriate, not just during the first half of Obama's great speech, but during all the speeches preceding his. Even the most serious comments were met with applause and yelling and shouting out, completely opposite to what was being said. It was just weird. Speakers could barely get 10 words out of their mouths without loud audience reaction in a completely opposite tone to what was being said. Who applauds and hoops and hollers like a pep rally when the speaker is talking about members of their own community that were just murdered? You could tell Obama was completely taken aback by this for the first half of his speech until he was able to convey the seriousness of what he was saying. It certainly didn't look like the families of the victims were joining in or enjoying the audience response very much.

First time ever that I agreed with anything on Faux News.

14. I cringed about 15 to 20 times....

I cringed about 15 to 20 times, some laughter and shouting was completely inappropriate. Like I said, College Jeopardy is very loud and rowdy too. 20 year olds in College are very boisterous, sometimes too much and not at the appropriate times.

I hear a lot of people, even among conservatives, say that Obama got his speech just right at the memorial for the Tucson shooting victims tonight. There were certainly part of the President’s speech I liked, but the overall tone of the event was political rally.
