Wisconsin Protests: The Five States that Ban Collective Bargaining for Teachers Rank Near the Bottom for Education Quality

With respect to teachers, there are five states that prohibit bargaining, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality, while in 11 other states, bargaining is permitted but not mandatory. How do the five states without collective bargaining for teachers rank in education? Watch this great You Tube to find out.

2. Yep, a stupid population is an easily controlled population and eventually other
countries will become the world leaders, and the US will fall to the bottom of the list subservient to the rest of the world. We will be the knuckle draggers of the 21st century. Those of wealth, education and talent will leave the US behind as a wasteland.

5. The modern "let them eat cake" right needs a history lesson.
Whether urban legend, popular myth or downright fabrication, the enduring imagery of Marie Antoinette is an apt metaphor for the modern Tea Party financiers and Right wing power brokers - David and Charles Koch...as well as their born on third base and thought they hit a triple band of yes-men.

How did that work out in the end for Louis and Marie?

Not so well if I recall my French history...

4. Not just education but highest rates of povery, poor health care
in fact all the quality of life stats.

Across the country, the GOP has all but decimated the
PRIVATE SECTOR UNIONS(Business). As the Unions lost
ground and became weaker, the standard of living
has likewise dropped.

12. Report based on 1999 test scores. Hard to prove a current point with data -
- compiled in the past century. IMO, Faithful Progressive is being intellectually dishonest in presenting twelve year old data without disclosing it. The link from the website to the test scores here > http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/states/USCHARTsat.html

While I doubt that there has been much change in the test scores, lets find evidence that can prove that point today and not for 1999.

My son is a teacher in Virginia and has not had a pay raise in 3 years also in Virginia you have to score higher on your Praxis test in order to become a teacher. I will also say this is the first time he has told me that he may be looking for another job because as he puts it I can make twice as much selling pharmceuticals, sad very sad. Oh yeah they are saying that they are going to give them a one time check for $500 to shut them up, to my son that is a slap in the face. He has been teaching for 10 years and makes $45,000 and that is because he also coaches varsity softball and does Model UN.

25.  Education (Average SAT and ACT Scores Ranked) (1999)
Only 5 states do not have collective bargaining for educators and have deemed it illegal. Those states and their ranking on ACT/SAT scores are as follows:
South Carolina -50th = 844
North Carolina -49th = 865
Georgia -48th = 854
Texas -47th = 893
...Virginia -44th = 896
Wisconsin, ranked 2nd = 1073
has collective bargaining for teachers.

This is a bit misleading that is why I wanted to find charts for both SAT and ACT and the percentage of students that took them in each state.

Teachers Unions, ACT/SAT, and Student Performance: Is Wisconsin Out-Ranking the Non-Union States?
February 21, 2011 in Students

As I posted yesterday, the tweets going around comparing Wisconsin’s SAT/ACT scores to five states where teachers have no right to unionize are based on bad data — it’s not true that Wisconsin’s SAT/ACT ranking is second in the nation, and that Texas, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina are all clustered at the bottom of the pile. The chart that says otherwise is based on outdated statistics and improper statistical analysis.

So what’s the truth? What would good data tell us about this question?

Well, it turns out that that’s kind of a complicated question. I can answer it, but you’ll have to bear with me for more than 140 characters.

big snip>

Yes, Wisconsin has great schools, with great outcomes. Yes, states without teachers’ unions lag behind. Yes, that lag persists even when you control for demographic variables. Yes, that difference seems to rest less on the quantifiable resources that unions fight to bring to the classroom than on the professionalism, positive working environment, and effective school administration that unions foster.

And yes, Virginia, (and Texas, Georgia, and North and South Carolina) unions do work.

22. Nice, quiet statement of the simple truth.
The problem is not unions. The problem is taxes that are just a tad too low.

Here in LA, we have just been advised that the charge for trash collection will be raised. It's a rather regressive way to raise money since it is a flat, per household increase, but most of us will gladly pay it even if we don't have much money. That is because the city does a good job of collecting our trash, and having a clean city is really important.

The increased trash collection charge is much more than $32 per year.

29. Finland
has strong, effective unions for teachers. In 1970, Finland passed legislation that required all teachers above the kindergarten level to hold a master's degree. According to assessments by internationally recognized and well-regarded entities (PISA and OECD), Finland's students have the highest math and science literacy.

Recognizing that adequate funding, well-trained and supported teachers, and involved parents are essential to a well-educated population is a no-brainer. Witnessing the continued corporate assault on public education vis-a-vis Obama's 'Race to the Top' without a whisper of protest constitutes willful ignorance.

32. Misleading data
aside from the fact that he used data from 1999, the data is skewed because in some states only the kids who are going to colleges out of state take the SATs, whereas in other states all the students must take them.

Aside from that - what about the $32/adult? That's a great idea!!
