2. This is great to hear.

I've said for a long time that the divisive, violent, hateful atmosphere with our government has been from this oversaturation of hatemongering on the radio. Marginalize the Limbaughs, Hannitys and others and maybe we can engage in a more civil, sane dialogue in this country.

Around here, the advertising for the Limbaughs, et al have been national advertisers. Often they are these mail-order, buy gold-type of ads.

I've often said the only purpose the Limbaughs on the radio have served is that they've emboldened the idiots of this country.

3. Truck drivers and lonely housewives listen to talk radio.

Women probably don't like the aggressive talk radio hosts.

There are, however, lots of right-wingers who catch a little bit of a show every once in a while.

I really like Thom Hartmann. I also like Ian Masters on KTLK -- Pacifica Radio and of course Democracy Now. Those are truly informative programs that don't yell at you.

I can't stand Public Radio. The sing-song voices just get on my nerves. That is a taste thing. They are too nice for me. I listen to learn, not to be entertained.

Ever wonder why Rush "Boss" Limbaugh's syndicated radio show is all over the place like the proverbial cheap suit?

If you do much driving in rural areas -- e.g. between cities -- "Boss" Limbaugh's bloviations are often the only thing you can pick up on a car radio. Hey, that's what CD players are for.

Did Rush accrue hundreds of local radio affiliates across the country because his political views are mainstream? That's obviously not it. OK, so why IS his show so "popular?" Why do hundreds of stations around the country carry his show, the most widely syndicated talkfest in the country?

Glad you asked.

The real story is not generally well-known. The only reason I know is through my covering the business of radio for years for several major daily newspapers and also, for industry trade magazines like Radio World.

It's because -- ready for this? -- Rush's show was, and presumably still is, given away for free to many local radio stations.

It IS the most listened to radio show in the country (NPR in the morning is #2) but this is just like the tea baggers illusion of size and that illusion feeds on itself and sells people in the "everyone is doing it" marketing ploy.
