3. Hightower lost his seat as Ag Commissioner to Perry's nasty campaign

He details the campaign in one of his books. Rove ran Perry's campaign and attacked Hightower with ads claiming he was in favor of burning flags (Obviously a distortion, and what this had to do with agriculture is anyone's guess). Perry and Rove refused to focus on the real reason they were running - to ease environmental protections on the pesticide giants.
The 30-second hot-button, smear spots worked and Perry squeaked out his first win.
Rove would go on to helm Bush's efforts to unseat Ann Richards, with Perry as Lt. Gov and the rest is history.

6. Just from the little I've seen of Perry so far, he strikes me

as being a total A-hole, ruthless to the core, his way or the highway, married to corporate money and will do their bidding to the Nth degree, all while talking all preachy to the evangelicals. He's many Republican's wet dream. We thought Bush was bad. I think Bush at least had a bit of a conscious. He was just a misguided ideological fool who allowed Dick Cheney to run the show.

allow me to verify that your observations of Rick Perry, including comparisons to Bush, are completely accurate IMHO. Many Republicans here don't even like him, but there have been no challengers who they like any better. And even though there are lots of Democrats in Texas, there are no Democratic leaders with any charisma who are well known enough state-wide to entice many of those D's to the polls. As much of an idiot as Perry is, he's very good at posturing and pandering to the tea party and the religious right folks who tend to show up in big enough numbers on Election Day to keep him in office.
