The TLC show Toddlers & Tiaras is creating controversy again, this time because of one girl who was dressed like Dolly Parton (complete with breast enhancements) and another dressed like Julia Roberts as a prostitute from Pretty Woman. Ana Kasaprian and Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks discuss.

2. It's like a dog show. They dress up their little darlings and make them sparkle for the judges.

Sometimes they get a treat and their owners get to show them off,win a trophy or money. Their hair is groomed, nails done, crated in and expected to perform. They wag their tails. Some love it. Some don't.

Dogs don't have years of therapy and monster confidence/body image issues ahead of them.

The child beauty-pageant queens who grew up


To my relief, the two shocking little Dolly Partons whom I had filmed all those years ago had both become poised, decent and disciplined young women. Who knows? Perhaps some of that is down to the beauty pageants. They certainly think so.

10. Well, this is a very small sample size which relies on self reporting.

Also, I imagine that the child beauty pageants of today are far worse. Did they have a Julia Roberts prostitute costume and or boob/butt enhancements 13 years ago? Did they have a TV show covering the kids and their parents (which significantly ups the ante and the desire for attention and massive expectations, etc.)?

11. Okay, but dog shows and pretty baby contests are just part of our world.

No different than pushy sports parents or stage mothers of young actors.They are bad for some and good for others.The Dolly Parton costume was worn by the same little girl's Mom and she seems very well adjusted.

Dog owners who abuse their dogs and parents who abuse their children are both wrong and harmful. That is the point.This culture on it's own is not ,IMHO, the problem. Was it a pedophile who killed Jon Benet? We don't know. So why say it is salacious and emotionally scaring without evidence.

I don't think I would be part of this world but if my little girl would adore doing it, and I could do it in a nurturing way, maybe I would.

shocked to see the horrible fashions they are trying to push off on these children. Provocative and way too old. I hope that parents see the danger.

or the one he says son shouldnt have sex until 16 and daughter 18. WTF? even though girls mature sooner than boys so one would think if not a sexist asshole, the genders would be reversed

when it comes to sex on this show, these people are hypocrites.
