Earlier this year, the Center for Media and Democracy released documents detailing some 800 model legislations crafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Included in those documents was the Prison Industries Act, legislation that had already been established in dozens of states across the country.

Like much of the model legislation created by ALEC, this bill is designed to help private corporations increase profits. In this case, those profits come from the use of prison labor. As Mike Elk and Bob Sloan wrote in The Nation, “prison labor for the private sector was legally barred for years, to avoid unfair competition with private companies.”

In addition to this legislation, ALEC crafted numerous pieces of legislation that resulted in harsher sentencing in the courts, meaning more prisoners and longer sentences. That, in turn, means more laborers off which to profit.

1. In the 1960's My father used prison labor on our FARM!
And then, it was prohibited. As a teen, I remember the the adult conversations, that did in fact deal with the right of law abiding citizens to have a decent job and not to have to compete with "prison labor" in the job market. Have to admit, though farm labor wasn't real popular at the time, but my father didn't have a real difficult time filling the needs. So, this is just another ploy. How do corps get richer?? Will they charge a premium for prison labor, but below minimum wage?? who gets the money?? On second thought, I know. We were told that the money was split between a bank account for the prisoner/worker and the costs of keeping him caged. Though, some how, I bet the taxpayers are not going to get the benefit of the earned income. Another way for the private sector to rip off the public sector. The prisoner earns wages, prison collects and distributes the dollars and they privateers still get their per prisoner, per diem with no offsets. Another SCAM, another hustle by the real crooks in CORPORATE AMERICA. There are days, except for the ones who are violent, the wrong people are in jail.
