13. I can't stand DWTS!
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 02:28 AM by Divine Discontent

But, Britehorn, even you have to admit that the cultural & civil rights discussion/implications of someone appearing on the #1 TV show who does not conform to demanded gender roles. This involves the very fight over rights we all ascribe to as progressives. Chaz is causing the discussion over fairness and acceptance to be amplified, and I support him.

This has often been a beef of some on DU who complain when something GLBT or something that brings up arguments over civil rights appears in this forum. If you don't want to watch it, since it's pretty clear who and what it's about, you should avoid it. People use that same discretion when they choose to view other videos in the forum.

Also, when you have a doctor, such as the one Fox News employs as a contributor (Keith Ablow) saying this nasty shit below, you realize we should all be supporting Chaz and defending him when people talk about it being on TV.

Dr Ablow said:

"Chaz Bono, the “transsexual” woman who underwent plastic surgery and takes male hormones in an effort to appear to be a man, and who asserts she is a man, will appear on the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars”I advise parents to not allow their children to watch the episodes in which Chaz appears."

Note Dr. Ablow’s use of both the pronouns “she” and “he” after referring to Bono as a woman. He continues:

"The last thing vulnerable children and adolescents need, as they wrestle with the normal process of establishing their identities, is to watch a captive crowd in a studio audience applaud on cue for someone whose search for an identity culminated with the removal of her breasts, the injection of steroids and, perhaps one day soon, the fashioning of a make-shift phallus to replace her vagina.

It is a toxic and unnecessary byproduct of the tragic celebration of transgender surgery that millions of young people who do watch “Dancing with the Stars” will have to ponder this question: Maybe my problems really stem from the fact that I’m a girl inside a boy’s body (or a boy inside a girls body)."

And you surely can imagine (or have heard) all the evil attacks we're all reading or hearing about Chaz from people who want him off the show because of how disgusted they are by him. His being there will help change people minds (I know for a fact it can happen, I finally got through to a long time Repub today after 8 years!) So, I encourage all of us to stand with Chaz, or please consider just avoiding the videos, because it sure as hell involves civil rights, and I am dancin' with Chaz!

Regards

17. Excellent post, thank you so much!
How sad that a Dr. would appear on television just to spread that kind of hatred.

Which is all the more reason why Chaz using the same medium, but without any anger, is so appropriate.

The Dr. had his say, and now Chaz is having his and I have a feeling that he has changed some minds already by doing this, or at least caused them to reflect and think a little. Kudos to the producers of DWTS for not caving to what was probably an intense campaign to keep him off the show. And as I said in another post, to Nancy Grace for her support which hopefully will influence many of her rightwing fans.

29. "the last thing vulernable children need"?
they weren't even alive when Chaz was a little girl who was brought out at the end of every Sonny and Cher show. The only way they'd be traumatized is by watching fux noose's screed on the issue... that's what would do more harm. For god's sake, who's got every episode of the Sonny and Cher variety show on beta or vhs tapes at the ready to be watched all day, every day? Christ! Get a fucking life already.

6. Ask all the Tea Party folks lobbying for him to fail.
When a transsexual does anything in America, it's political whether the transsexual wants it to be or not.

9. How the hell is it not?
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 01:25 AM by sabrina 1
Have transexuals been granted the same rights as everyone else yet? Do they have a voice in this country? Have you seen the hatred directed at him by the far right?

How many people have spoken for them in a way that shows the haters are just plain wrong, just as haters always are and always have been?

He has done more by doing this for the advancement of rights than a million speeches would do.

The far right haters made his life political. He chose not to let them intimidate him. Bravo for him!

Oh, and an extra bonus, it probably drove them crazy to see him not allow their hatred to stop him.

14. +1 as I wrote above, it pushes the discussion forward, because we see how angry it makes the other
side, and what means they've gone to in screaming at ABC over his inclusion.

Cheers to Chaz! We're dancing with ya!

15. Yes, he made a powerful political statement tonight
and he did so beautifully. In a sense, it was similar to those who chose to sit at lunch counters when haters tried to stop them. A simple act they should never have been denied the right to do, but in this insane world, that was the way it was. If they had not done that then, someone would have to do it later.

I'm sure Chaz would rather just live his life, but circumstances placed him a unique position where he has been in the public eye and as a result a target of the same kind of bigotry.

To do this in the face of so much hatred must have been difficult and it took courage. And those who supported him encouraged him deserve a lot of credit also.

He has made it easier now for the next generation, just as those who refused to sit in the back of the bus, made it easier for the generations following them.

But those who lead the way to break through the barriers constructed for them are especially brave.

I was happy to see too that Nancy Grace came out in support of him. Even though I generally can't take her, she has a huge following among whom I'm sure are many 'law and order' rightwingers. She set a great example and hopefully made a few of them think.

18. I tell ya what, he sure was having a good time!
It was written all over his face. That face, or that smile is still the same one I remember when his parents walked out on stage when he was a toddler. Same cuteness.

I hope he wins. I hope he wins all the way. I've never watched this show, so I don't know how it works, but I hope he wins it all!

To me he's already a winner. He's an inspiration to all of us.

Will he be back next week? If so, I'll watch.

:hi:

19. He definitely was!
I don't watch it either, I used to when it first started simply because I love dance and wanted to see how they could possibly teach people to dance well enough to make it worth watching. I was actually very impressed how those people who never danced before, like Chaz as I understand it, could learn to be so good in such a short time, and at such a late stage in many of their lives.

But I haven't seen it for a long time now. How it works, well, I think airc, they do several different kinds of dances and the judges choose those who go on to the next level. But the viewing audience gets to vote for their favorites, so a lot depends on how many fans they have.

In another thread, someone posted the number to call to support Chaz. Don't forget that when Bristol Palin was on she in no way deserved to win based on her performance, but Palin fans burned up the telephone lines trying to get her to win.

We can do the same for Chaz, it's the way the show works. In a way that's why I stopped watching though because it's not about the dancing, and it's kind of wrong that the best performers don't always win. But we didn't make the rules and everyone knows how it works.

To your question 'will he be on again', yes and if he makes it to the next round after that, he'll be on again, until he is eliminated or goes all the way to the end. That will depend on the votes.

20. Damn... I was impressed & inspired by Kirstie Alley last year...
and could not imagine having her "moxy" and courage. With all due respect to Kirstie, Chaz has defintely upped the ante. I think he will inspire a lot of people--far transcending the entire gender identity issue. Good on ya, Chaz. That smile was killer. ;)

21. my daughter came in while I was watching and yelled at me
"you hate this show - you're always yelling to turn it off" Aftr I explained the controversy, she said "Oh, so you're boycotting the boycott?" I further explained that I don't know whether what Chaz did is right or wrong, but I do know it's not for me to judge.
Except, I have to call if I want him to continue, so I guess it really is for me to judge!

31. I just went to google and typed, 'judges gave chaz' and then the link recapping
it always works for me by using a short search like that...

here ya go

I was a fan of Carson Kressly before this show and now I'm a fan x1000. He was SO MUCH FUN. He reminded me of Pheobe, from "Friends", running (anyone see that episode?). I don't see him winning the whole thing, but I might give up my children's college savings to see his freestyle. I think the judges gave him a fair score of 17.

Holy J.R. Martinez! I was completely unfamiliar with his story prior to tonight, but I don't think I would have expected what I saw tonight. He was smooth and confident during his Viennese Waltz. This definitely did not look like a 1st week dance. J.R. is going far, no doubt. He's tied for first with 22.

I was pleasantly surprised by Ricki Lake. I thought she might do pretty well tonight and she lived up to my expectations. She received 20 points for her Viennese Waltz.

And then there was Chaz. He came out with a bang. His Cha Cha was a lot of fun, despite being technically imperfect. I'm sure he's going to be around for a while. He finished off the night with a 17.

33. Go Chaz and Carson
I never watch DWTS but wanted to see Chaz do well and he did. What a wonderful smile. Also loved Carson Kressley's dance as it was so full of energy and joy. Both Chaz and Carson seemed to be having a great time and that translated well into their dance.
