Occupy T-Mobile: March from Zuccotti Park to T-Mobile Store Will Confront Cell Phone Giant’s Union-Busting

“T-MOBILE WORKERS ARE THE 99%!”

Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protestors and members of the Communications Workers of America will march from Zuccotti Park tomorrow to a nearby T-Mobile store to protest the cell phone carrier’s vicious union-busting tactics.

For years, workers at T-Mobile, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German telecom giant Duetsche Telekom, have struggled for the same workplace rights their colleagues in Germany already enjoy. But T-Mobile has waged a campaign of intimidation and fear to stop its own employees from exercising their basic rights.

Now T-Mobile workers and their allies are fighting back. CWA members and Occupy Wall Street protestors will confront T-Mobile in lower Manhattan and deliver a simple message: T-Mobile workers are the 99%, and they will not stand for union-busting and intimidation any longer.

Who: Occupy Wall Street protestors and CWA members

When: Friday, November 4, 2011, at 12:30 PM

What: Occupy T-Mobile! OWS March to Protest T-Mobile’s union-busting

Where: March begins at Zuccotti Park at 12:30 and arrives at the T-Mobile store at the intersection of Maiden Ln and Water St. at 12:45.

Background: T-Mobile has taken the low road in labor relations with its employees. The company flies in high level executives and hires high-priced union-busting attorneys whenever workers try to gain a voice on the job. The same company that in Germany prides itself on its relationship with its workers and their union, Ver.di, takes the low road in the United States by using fear and intimidation whenever workers try to organize a union.

CWA and Ver.di have joined together to form a new union called TU Union. Workers in T-Mobile have been joining TU, but T-Mobile has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep workers from joining.

500 Members of ver.di, the German union that represents Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile workers rally in support of American T-Mobile USA workers on May 12 in Cologne, Germany outside of DT's shareholder meeting. The workers formed a human chain to the meeting venue and released black balloons as a sign of mourning for their U.S. co-workers' rights.
