WEEKLY ADDRESS: Creating an Economy Built to Last
In this week’s address, President Obama spoke from Indonesia and told the American people that during his trip to the Asia Pacific, he has made progress opening up markets to support thousands of American jobs and keep us on track to double American exports by 2014. The President’s trip underscores his belief that our businesses will always be successful competing around the world and that he will continue to do everything possible to create jobs for the American people.

1. "We can compete against anybody, and we can win."

Sure, as long as we don't mind earning wages that are nowhere close to the wages we earned 30 years ago. I wonder what the mean salary of these Asian/Pacific citizens is? Also, take in mind that most of these places have universal health care. President Obama knows that in order for Americans compete and win, without losing more of our living standard that these "free trade agreements." must be "fair trade agreements." Sure, America needs jobs desperately. Good paying jobs as well as a return to progressive taxation that takes much of the burden for paying for our government, off of the shoulders of workers and back on the shoulders of those who can easily afford it.

With OWS growing daily (thank God), President Obama cannot really believe that our movement is ALL about jobs. Sure, we need good paying jobs, not jobs that will occupy us and keep us too busy to protest the inequalities in our system. "Free trade agreements" are the problem, not the answer. Unregulated capitalism is the main problem. Capitalism that allows the wealthy and corporate "persons" to control our government is what has destroyed America. Free trade always results in "economic osmosis," where the jobs flow to the place where costs are less. Environmental regulations, pay,benefits, these all affect the bottom line of corporations. Since America still has some rudimentary protections against destroying our environment, we have the highest (and growing) health care costs in the world and workers who want a living wage, the jobs will flow to the Asia/pacific region.
