Why ban Ziptie handcuffs? They're a trap...only in your mind - they're quite easy to break out of.

Saw that today's #1 post in 'Greatest' threads was a call to ban zip tie handcuffs.

I found the story about the girl who was restrained with them begging for relief to be more than a little disturbing.

Here's the thing:

You don't even have to ban 'em, because they're really easy to defeat.

K&R this to spread the word a little :)

1. If they use ordinary zip-ties you can break them. But usually they use Tuff-Cuffs.
Like this: http://www.chiefsupply.com/628-Bingolds-1-Tuff-Cuff-White.aspx

And you can't get out of those.

2. Nicely demonstrated.
Zip ties are secured with a tiny plastic pawl. There are a number of ways to defeat that weakness. This video shows one of those methods. There are many others.

3. The only thing I got from this video was to tape your wrists!
I think the real ties are but bumping proof!

4. And then the cops will give you a new pair and make them even tighter,
and maybe beat you and increase the charges.

They need to ban these things.

6. Don't forget the tazing.
...and you're right, likely a gang riot club beating. At any rate, when the others see what happens when someone throws their suddenly free arms up, no one else will try

I don't think the zips are meant to lock down hard core criminals. They just keep civil miscreants at bay during the administrative phase of an arrest. There's no reason to add escape or resisting charges to a misdemeaner. It's probably best to leave them on and focus on finding a lawyer.

7. The problem is that there have been reports of the things being too tight.
They can cause excruciating pain in people who are forced to sit for hours in a bus wearing them. They may even cause nerve damage. They need something a little gentler for handling civil disobedience.

8. Good point
I can see how that can be a concern.
I was cuffed once with the steel ones when I was younger, and I naturally complained they were too tight. That earned me a couple more clicks.

It's not pleasant.

13. Additional charges
like Attempted Escape.

So, you get out of the cuffs. You're still in jail with a face full of pepper spray and a lot of baton welts.

5. The cuffs being used are NOT simple zip ties.
That won't work on the zip cuffs that are in wide use these days.

9. It is not a legitimate job of police officers to administer pain. Full stop.
That is torture, not policing.

But a lot of people make excuses for beating their kids, too.

12. actively resisting arrest or attempting escape is not recommended.
i'm not at all a fan of excessive police force, and overly tight cuffs is certainly not a good thing.
but breaking out of them and giving the police an excuse to escalate is not a good idea.
