The United States is slated to spend 59% of its Fiscal Year 2012 discretionary budget on 'defense'. The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

defense contractors! I know they love the wealth we have no choice but to send their way by decree of our Empire.

Meanwhile ... back at the reality of lowered expectations, diminishing returns and abject deprivations, the Underclass is not cheering, nor is it amused.

Are we economic, collateral damage, a write-off, obsolete, potential proto-terrorists, or what? Maybe a combination of them all.

3. It's more than that
Take a look in the DOE budget. There is a line item for nuclear. I think there are a few others in other departments as well. I found it at $889B for last year's budget. I then calculated that it was about $3,800/yr for every adult.

5. The word "discretionary" shoud be in your title. How deceptive is that?
And the discretionary part is pretty small in relation to the whole budget. Moreover it will be squeezed out as entitlements grow faster than everything else.

13. 59% of a third is a lot less than 59%.

Cronyism, corruption, and a all out of ballpark spending on military hardware, in a contest to try to outgo the US, was some of the reasons USSR was falling apart.. The issue of nationality, was also part of it all, and a whole other cases who in the end was able to make it impossible for USSR to continue even after the "outer empire" of Eastern Europe slept away in 1988-89..

And as a foreigner, who know little about history, it is absolutely sad to se the same thing happening in the US, even tho it is still hope for US to reform, and to wake up to the reality of things.. US are still a democratic country, where everyone (in theory) are the same in front of the Law. And if US had the will, all of this cronyism, and corruption who are starting to be rather rampant in the US this days, would be something of the past. Because the evidences are there, clear as the day is bright, it just need some Justice to get it all up in the day...

But, the powers, doesn't want, or doesn't dear to get it all up in the days as it would tear the whole fabric of the country from each other I guess... And the few times someone really wanted to do away with cronyism, and corruption, they often ended up in a gutter, or killed outright.. So many of your greatest presidents, or politic ans, have been killed, by "unknown"....

9. Tax payers
Cenky, you know that the tax payers pay DOD and the rich elite use it to steal the weak countries their natural resources. The elite is stealing both the tax payers and the other country (not counting the lives of people involved).

12. Wastefully spending
Both The Republicans and Democrats approve of American Imperialism and really do not care how much is spent on the military,in fact they would rather military spending increase as long as Israel is a part of that increase. We give Israel billions in weapons and aid and 75% of that aid is turned around and spent buying weapons from the US,a never ending cycle of spending on killing machines that is largely for killing Arabs in their own land by both Israel and the US,and as of now they are threatening to open up another front on Iran.
It never stops.

Sadly too many Americans in this country,Glorify and worship war and the military, which also points to culture a that glorifies violence and war,as long as we are the ones with the biggest guns and is doing the invading and occupying.

But I always keep this saying in the back of my mind, that "Those who live by the Sword,Shall Die by the Sword
