Good to see Keith getting to say what he really thinks.

"Scott Walker, fascist bastard!"

I like the sound of that.

but he is wrong about volunteer fire departments. The membership fees allow them to train, buy, and maintain equipment. If people were allowed to pay AFTER their house caught on fire, there would be no equipment, or volunteers, for that matter.

6. You are right plus it's the fact that this person as others live outside the city
limits and pay no city tax. The fee covers their fair share to run the dept. It's not fair to not pay and then cry when your house is on fire and think well I'll pay now is WRONG.

rather than obsessing on the little guy down the street who just may not pay as much as you, the US may not have turned into the freaking banana republic that it has become.

26. I disagree. Fire departments put out fires. When its gets to the point where
only the affluent can afford to pay for their services, I think we can make that argument that we have a very dysfunctional society that has poor priorities.

Municipal services, police, health/medical and fire especially, should be supported through federal, state and local taxes.

32. In NY city, during the civil war they had rival "volunteer fire
departments" who did the same thing. They collected "insurance" from people before they would extinguish their home/apt. fire. Talk about going back to more barbaric times. Fucking Nazi's have more compassion.

Everything for the wealthy!!:sarcasm:

extinguish your burning trailer (home), you would have a different perspective. How much more will it cost (since that is your entire view)taxpayers to have more people homeless, needing assistance and a place to live? People before profit.

to let someones house burn down. Period. End of story. There are no contingencies, circumstances, or conditions which make it anything but outrageously abhorrent. 10. Didn't FDR address this question?
His 17 December 1940 press conference, talking about lend-lease:

Suppose my neighbor's home catches fire, and I have a length of garden hose four or five hundred feet away. If he can take my garden hose and connect it up with his hydrant, I may help him to put out his fire. Now, what do I do? I don't say to him before that operation, "Neighbor, my garden hose cost me $15; you have to pay me $15 for it."

13. Unless this VFD was just formed, and this one has not, there are already
trained fire fighters and fire fighting equipment ready, made possible by the usual fundraisers that bring the community together to support any one in the community who may be in need of their help. I doubt that a fee of $75 per household would be enough to support the needs of a working fire department anyway. This is a completely draconian and uncivilized way to respond to people in dire need.

15. If you are part of the community,
then pay your fucking membership fee. Those who purposely avoid paying their fee are making a choice to not participate in the community, until their house is on fire, then they suddenly want to be part of it??? If you exempt one or two households, then why not everyone?? If people are allowed to not pay, then more and more won't pay, then there is no money to operate the fire department. I'm as liberal as any of you, but there comes a point when a person has to do at least the minimum for themselves. It is not asking too much to pay your membership fee to the fire department.

You are a Ron Paul style libertarian. Apparently. Liberals don't want to make government small enough to drown in a bathtub. We don't see taxes as the world's greatest evil. The fire department is what taxes are for.

I am just not the kind of liberal that the right easliy (and sometimes rightfully) makes out to look stupid. This is very simple - in the rural south, there are many unincorporated areas that do not have tax-subsidized fire departments. Those who live there know it, and their homeowner's insurance is even higher because of it. The membership fees are necessary to operate and fund the fire department. There is no "fire fairy" that magically puts out your fucking fire for free. Government has nothing to do with it, taxes have nothing to do with it. If you choose to live in an unincorporated area with a volunteer fire force, PAY YOUR GODDAMNED FEE, and if you don't, it is YOUR fault if your house burns down.

The state should step in to make certain local fire departments are adequately funded, one way or another. You do not let homes burn. Call yourself a liberal all you want.

43. But the lack of fees isn't the problem
"There's no way to go to every fire and be able to keep up the manpower, the equipment, and just the funding for the fire department," said South Fulton Mayor David Crocker.

The Fire Dept. DID respond but they just stood by. So it wasn't about fees, or manpower or equiptment. If it were they would have just looked it up and stayed home. Instead they used manpower, equipment and funding to thumb their noses a someone that was undergoing a tramatic event. How much more $$$ would it have cost them to put the fire out instead of standing by and watching it burn?

16. Your argument is compeltely negated by the fact that
they went to the fire regardless of whether the person had payed or not. They were there with all their gear and there is absolutely zero reason that they couldn't just fight the fire and send her a bill.

28. The reason that they went to the fire
is to see that the neighbor's houses, who DID pay their fee, did not burn.
I live in a rural fire district, the fire station is just down the road. I make sure that my fees are paid every year - it's a priority, and it's not that difficult.

36. Ok, so...
the logical way to keep a fire from spreading would be to put it out, right? What if they miscalculated and the fire did start to spread?

There are better ways to provide fire protection in a community and they don't involve looking up whether someone has paid a bill before putting out a fire. Instead of collecting a fee, how about collecting taxes and using those, what's the big problem?

33. Bzzzzzt. Try again.
The only thing "volunteer" about a fire department should be the fire fighters. Everything else should be paid for by taxes. Subscriber or "membership" fees are bullshit.

44. You know what's comical about the fire protection annual "fee"?
If you'd propose it as a property or income "tax" equivalent to $75 a year, these same people in Tennessee imposing and supporting the fee would be screaming bloody murder about big government imposing more taxes on them.
