http://www.laborradio.org/node/4681Tension between janitors, management, and the police officers that are forced to come between them reached a new level in Houston as four janitors were injured by police horses during a protest. A video on the file sharing network YouTube and also posted on the laborradio.org website, shows a line of workers and their supporters being broken up by police and the workers being pushed to the curb by mounted officers. One thousand seven hundred janitors are entering the fifth week of a strike in Houston protesting low pay and seeking benefits. They clean the office buildings for some of the countries leading companies, such as Chevron Corporation. Chevron and the other companies have been silent and ignored calls from the workers cleaning their buildings to put pressure on the five cleaning companies to pay more than the average of $5.35 per hour with no benefits. The result has been increasingly heated exchanges between city police officers and the workers committing acts of non-violent civil disobedience. Forty-four janitors and their supporters were arrested on Friday. Of the four workers injured by horses, one was an 83-yar-old janitor.
