Full text of Keith's Special Comment after the jump.

Finally, as promised, a Special Comment about the President's cataclysmic deception about Iran.

---

There are few choices more terrifying than the one Mr.. Bush has left us with tonight.

We have either a president who is too dishonest to restrain himself from invoking World War Three about Iran at least six weeks after he had to have known that the analogy would be fantastic, irresponsible hyperbole -- or we have a president too transcendently stupid not to have asked -- at what now appears to have been a series of opportunities to do so -- whether the fairy tales he either created or was fed, were still even remotely plausible.

A pathological presidential liar, or an idiot-in-chief. It is the nightmare scenario of political science fiction: A critical juncture in our history and, contained in either answer, a president manifestly unfit to serve, and behind him in the vice presidency: an unapologetic war-monger who has long been seeing a world visible only to himself.

After Ms Perino's announcement from the White House late last night, the timeline is inescapable and clear.

By Melvin A. Goodman
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bal-op.cia06dec06,0,915322.story

U.S intelligence agencies have concluded in a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in fall 2003 and that Tehran is now "less determined to develop nuclear weapons." The new findings will make it more difficult for the Bush administration to gain domestic and international support for the use of military force against Iran. The findings also will complicate efforts to arrange a third round of U.N. sanctions against Iran and could open the door to a policy of diplomatic engagement.

The new estimate comes at an important juncture in the bureaucratic battle between the White House and the Pentagon over the possible use of force against Tehran. President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have been making the case for military power, with the president warning in October that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War III and the vice president promising "serious consequences" if Tehran did not abandon its nuclear program. Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney were aware of the new findings before they used their provocative language.

At the same time, senior military leaders have been arguing in public against the need for force against Iran, which they didn't do prior to the Iraq war. The new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, and the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, Adm. William J. Fallon, have sought to play down speculation about striking Iran's nuclear facilities. General officers in Iraq have noted that Iran has cooperated in stopping the flow of roadside bombs to Iraq and that Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who has support from Iran, has begun to rein in his militia. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, though silent during these exchanges, must have lent tacit support.

The latest intelligence estimate indicates the intelligence community has learned some lessons from the Iraq debacle in 2002 and 2003, when it politicized the intelligence on weapons of mass destruction in order to support the administration's campaign for military action. Before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, the CIA prepared a specious NIE on Iraqi WMD - a skewed, unclassified "white paper" that was circulated on Capitol Hill prior to the vote to authorize force against Iraq, and a flawed speech for then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell that was given at the United Nations a month before the war.

19. Keith Olbermann is our Edward R. Murrow
Or, at least he's the closest thing that comes to him. With so much of our corporate news media willfully ignoring anything controversial, corrupt, misleading, traitorous, (need I go on) perpetuated by this administration, at least we have Keith. He's a brave man, who isn't afraid to speak truth to power. A good American. Personally I'm worried about his safety. I hope MSNBC has provided him with top notch security. I hope anyone who heard his Special Comment tonight will spread the word. There's very little mention of it over the Internet right now because, why? No one wants to rock the boat? Network and cable newscasters are cowards who are afraid they'll lose their cushy million dollar-plus-a-year salaries if they support/agree with Keith's comments? The news corporations are owned by people who have such close ties to this administration that they'll lose big time if they offend the prez and his goombas? All of the above? It's in light of all this that Keith Olbermann's comments are so important. Somebody up there at MSNBC likes him, otherwise he wouldn't be getting the green light to tell us the truth night after night, regardless of how many of us call in, write in, text-in or e-mail our support. Kudos to whomever that person/those people are. More power to ya, Keith, and keep 'em comin'!

44. My rant to MSNBC:
"Bill Moyers and Keith Olbermann are quite simply the only remaining real journalists on television. While the White House Press Corpse (with the exception of Helen Thomas, of course) stand by while drivel spews forth on a regular basis from so called “press conferences,” the mainstream media are unable to wrap their feeble brains around the mountains of lies and deception woven by the Bush administration.

Olbermann gets it. And even he is marginalized – he calls the President of the United States a “bald-faced liar” on national television – and in a simplistic, Hollywood culture of “news” it rates not a bleep.

Corporate Media – the downfall of free journalism in the US.
At least keep Olbermann on . . . someone has to keep shouting that the emperor has no clothes, even if the American people are too busy watching American Idol."

54. OMG.. the greatest 8 minutes of TV I've seen in decades.
Keith is a national treasure. He brings up so many amazing points. I was struck in particular by his comments toward the end... that Bush could have used that news he got in August that "calming news" and let the people in on it. The asshole-in-chief instead chose to continue his rhetoric. The thing that is so suspect about all of it is that, if you recall, the OIL prices were completely out of control at that point rocketing higher and higher and it was and is blamed by the instability of the Iran situation. Bush could have calmed that... instead we pay and pay more and more for it. Consumer confidence fell into the toilet in the past months, and once again the Iran situation was mentioned for that, and it affected the real estate market collapse... but Bush chose not to soothe the nation and calm the citizens and the markets. He chose to keep us feeling insecure and unsure. Any reasonably intelligent person should be able to listen to Keith's commentary and grasp that it's all been bullshit -- every single day of these past 7 years has been bullshit from Bush. Impeach that asshole already!

61. I wonder about the effectiveness of KO since he seems to be preaching to the choir.
I do not have cable, so I don't get to see him and my internet connection is dialup, so that is not practical either. I know he is applauded here all the time, but are we the ones who really need to have our eyes opened? Edward R Murrow had a much wider and more diverse audience than KO has now with a cable show that only has a very small slice of the market. That being said, I was at a friends house one day and he is a man who bleeds Republican and he watched an entire clip of KO online where he was slamming Bush, something we never could have talked about without getting to a heated and uncomfortable argument. But it would be nice if KO had a bigger audience and one that really needs to hear what he has to say.
