But he didn't deny global warming. He said that action on global warming should be scientifically sound.

A lot of developing countries could face set-backs due to the need to reduce greenhouse emissions. If we do "X" to combat global warming, and "X" inhibits improvements in the developing world, then "X" should be something scientifically sound, and not a feel-good measure promoted by people who think that all industrialization is bad.

That's what the Pope said. Furthermore, he has promoted concern about global warming.

Is there anyone here who thinks that the Pope's call for global warming solutions to be based in science is wrong? I mean really!?

Usually I love these Headzup cartoons, but this one trashing the Pope is offensive (IMO). Good satire is based in truth and this completely distorts Pope B16's actual record on this issue. Here:
At a Vatican conference on climate change, Pope Benedict urged bishops, scientists and politicians - including UK environment secretary David Miliband - to "respect creation" while "focusing on the needs of sustainable development".

The Pope's message follows a series of increasingly strong statements about climate change and the environment, including a warning earlier this year that "disregard for the environment always harms human coexistence, and vice versa".

6. Hey, redpen...
Until I read this report, I had no problem with the Pope's environmental stance.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=501316&in_page_id=1811&ito=1490

Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering.

The German-born Pontiff said that while some concerns may be valid it was vital that the international community based its policies on science rather than the dogma of the environmentalist movement.

The problem is, saying it needs to be based on firm evidence & not dogma, he's going along with the whole "jury's still out" crowd.
The jury isn't out. All peer reviewed science says it's a fact. The evidence is there.

Are his statements going to get us any closer to taking actual action towards saving our environment, and thus ourselves?
Or were they meant to flippantly dismiss those fighting hard to actually make a change?
They sure seem that way to me.

And a man of "dogma", claiming proven science is "dogma", is, to me, a perfect target for satire.
But, seriously, redpen, thank you for watching, and commenting.

7. I see why you would react to that report...
...but the second line you quoted isn't really supported by B16's statement — at least nowhere that I can find. He certainly hasn't been in the "jury's still out" camp before and, as Pope, he's not the kind of person who makes radical changes of position. Even if I tend to agree with the editorial position of the observer, I don't trust assessments of "statements" that don't provide the text of the statement. The article you linked makes claims about what the Pope's statement "suggests" but doesn't allow the reader to decide for him- or herself.

The problem is that the statement isn't supposed to be released until January 1, 2008, so it isn't available in its entirety. From the excerpts I've read, though, I think the bigger controversy is going to be over the suggestion that gay marriage is a threat to world peace. The message apparently makes a connection between the health and liberty of the family to the health and liberty of the greater human family. This is a wonderful and cogent analogy, except that the Pope's message makes plain that he believes a healthy family consists of a mommy and a daddy who are actively breeding. I'm going to wait for the full text before rendering judgment, but frankly, I'm expecting a firestorm in response from the gay community and those of us who support them. Stay tuned for more material.

Anyway, thanks for responding. I still love your work and look forward to future Headzup cartoons.

BTW, if you do Benedict again, the Colonel Klink accent was hilarious.
