I had to put my son on meds at 19 for violent outburst, & the nutty psychiatrist had him misdiagnosed with Schizophrenia and put him on Depakote and Prozac for three years (didn't even test my son, just a judgement call on doc's part). My son was always having hand tremors.
I finally was lucky or blessed enuf to read an article in the Parade magazine section about Asperger's in 2003, and knew right then and there that is what my son really had. So I dropped the doc , and went to a professional who knew about Asperger's . This neuro-psychologist tested my son for four days of evaluations and concluded > Asperger's Syndrome!
He recommended a psychiatrist who knew about Asperger's Syndrome for the correct meds...Abilify had just been passed by the FDA a year before. The good doc weaned son off of Depakote gradually and introduced Abilify . So now my son has been on Abilify and Prozac for the last three years. Abilify is highly recommended for adult Asperger's, but I don't know about children.
