diagnosed eight years ago when he was in the first grade after several years of knowing that something just wasn't quite "right" with him. But I'm also a paralegal, and I know that, at this time, there just isn't enough legal ground to stand on for such a class-action suit to be successful, not enough at all.
And I'm as strong an environmentalist as they come, but the evidence is still out when it comes to the link between autism/Asperger's and environmental causes. The reason there appears to be a surge in cases these past several years has much more to do with increased awareness on the part of doctors, schools, teachers and parents, and vastly improved diagnostic techniques, than any environmental causes.
And I may be a single parent, but I can certainly understand why the divorce rate for parents of these children would be so high. It's emotionally, mentally, physically and financially exhausting and I'm sure it would take a toll on even strong marriages. I'm very fortunate to be seriously involved with a wonderful man who understands the situation and who will likely make a great stepfather for my son. Very fortunate, indeed.
