I am having a tough day.
Things are getting on my nerves, and I think my awareness that I have now of why this stuff gets on my nerves is making it worse. Christmas music blasting...I can't stand loud music like that. I was trying to bake at my parent's and completely screwed up the recipe because I couldn't concentrate because of the torturously loud Christmas music. The auditory sensitivity thing is just magnified today for some reason, badly. My Dad was sweeping the floor earlier and the 'siss, siss, siss' sound was driving me freaking INSANE. I mean, my nerves are just like on complete overload, I can feel the energy coming off everything...I know I am on a CNS overload right now and I just wanted to put it out there because it probably will not change until Tues. or Wed. at the earliest and I could end up having a major melt-down if it goes on too long and then regretting it. But this stuff is just adding up one by one, the sounds, the clutter, the disarray, the way the people around me are hyped up and acting weird because of the holiday...I feel so on edge, I guess is what I am saying. I do hope everyone has a Merry Christmas but I just wanted to put this out there in case the holidays are affecting anyone else like this.

1. How about one of these?

Try and find a quiet room to be by yourself. Take a bath. Go for a walk. Drive to the store - (and take the LONG way.)

Hope it gets better.

2. You sound like my son !
He is out with his grandpa right now, so all that energy is at the mall somewhere, but he takes meds (Abilify and Prozac) and wears headphones to block out the noise. Then he blasts his eardrums with the headphones with alternative indy music!

Melatonin is really good with helping Asperger's settle down and sleep at nite... it is over the counter and is all-natural and costs only about 5 bucks!

3. Hang in there
We had family Christmas at my Brother-in-laws last night and my son did wonderfully, despite the lack of any accomodations on his behalf. He SO rocks!

The headphones idea was good, perhaps going for a walk?

Have a relaxing Christmas, idgiehkt.

4. thanks for all the feedback
it's back to the insanely loud Christmas music right now. Even my sister, who is an NT just told my dad it's too damn loud. It jangles my nerves at it's like a cumulative effect.

5. You might want to get in the habit of wearing ear plugs. They
don't block out conversation, but are wonderful for hearing sensitive folks. I wear them on airplanes (even without being overly sensitive to noise) just to mellow out the background noise. It's relaxing.

6. "Mack's" earplugs work great.
I've never tried sound-canceling headphones, but some people swear they work too.

Good luck

7. I find earplugs uncomfortable and even painful
while I don't have any diagnosed reason why my nervous system is hay-wire some things bother me that don't bother anyone else I know. Earplugs are one of them but the noise canceling headphones are worth the pressure on my head - I can't fly without them (for take offs and landing I have to use ear-planes earplugs, they hurt but without them I have to deal with dizzy spells for days which kind of puts a kink in a vacation. I have headphones from Radio Shack and Sharper Image - they were each $50 - I bought my kids their own for a flight we took for a vacation and it helped them with the plane noise also. One son has Nonverbal Learning Disorder and the other has Aspergers. Both suffer from Sensory Integration Dysfunction.
