I think the majority of the posts initiating the disruption are constructed by a very small minority of active posters. However, and while I'm sure I could be accused of arrogance for saying it, a very large number of active posters fall for this garbage and run with it, creating a cycle that allows the disruption to become self-sustaining.
If one were to believe the world is a rational place, one might assume a collection of individuals so prone to believing in bizarre conspiracy theories and who as a result have at least familiarized themselves with the actual uses of propaganda would be sensitive to this. But, no, this is not a rational world, which is why propaganda of this sort works so well.
There are a number of posters who have become active just in the last few months, some of which have been long-time members but have a trivial posting record since ~2004. I don't know why exactly, but I remember one of these specifically. I used to do battle with him at length in 2004. The day after the election, he stopped posting and did not resurface until sometime late last year (well, 2008 ... I'm not acclimated to 2010 yet). He's been prolific of late. He says nothing that would result in a TS, so it is useless to try to alert on him. In fact, he seems to know the rules quite well and stays strictly within them. While I'm sure I've not read everything he's posted, I've read a lot of it (but have avoided engaging him), and he has done nothing but post negative commentary of both the President and numerous Democratic members of Congress. He's never, to my knowledge, posted a positive comment about a Democrat.
The backhanded racial commentary is becoming more and more overt, but in subtle steps, such that I wonder when the clampdown will occur and how it will be instituted. I suspect this has been allowed to go on long enough that, if anything is attempted, we will experience a rift the likes of which DU has not endured since its early days.
