You may have already seen Kendra Pullen's blog at the White House site. She is a 4th grade science teacher receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. 80 teachers receive the ward and 20 mentors or mentoring programs. What is notable to me is how much they all seem to be a part of innovative teaching, some sort of hands-on system is implemented. I like Ms. Pullen's, "hands-on, minds-on". While I think hands-on needs to supplement core learning, I do think there should be much more of it in most classrooms. I think many charter schools are forging new territory and can serve as a role model for neighborhood schools to transform their curriculums. I don't know why there is so much opposition to change.
