This is about the primaries
bottom line, if Obama fails, certain people look good for having supported other candidates in the primary.

1. Obama is implementing Clinton-like policies
I hoped we would get better, but at their worst, Clinton policies are still better than Republican or cuckoobananas. And Edwards? Nothing further needs to be said there. We're in as good a shape as we would be with either of those two. I don't see any other candidate supporter "looking good" if Obama fails, which by the way he isn't, per Rachel Maddow. How many Maddow threads have there been? Three??

3. To extend that logic ...
It's actually about them. *They* want to look good. *They* want to be right. *They*, for some bizarre reason, want to score Internet debate points. Or, as grantcart put it, it's all about I.

I read an article the other day written from the perspective of someone who did not like either the Senate or House HCR plans and had no delusions about what was going to come out of conference. But, the author made a point of saying, this did not equate to him not wanting it passed because *it wasn't about him*. Paraphrased heavily, the logic of his argument was that critics of HCR proposals come in two forms: those who are agitating and will continue to agitate for something better but support forward motion of whatever form and those who are prioritizing their own wants over the needs of others.

To put it bluntly, if you oppose passage of the HCR bill, you are either ignorant or have prioritized your own ideological principles and/or hatred of some mythical creature known as the corporation over the practical needs of the millions of Americans the bill will actually help. The justification the latter use in a subconscious attempt to assuage their liberal guilt over not supporting help for the drastically poor is that opposing the reform bills will lead to something better. This, however, is a delusion, and it has shown to be an delusion for almost a century now. Because it is a delusion, this position also requires a villain on whom to plant any guilt should their desire of killing reform come to fruition without the second, delusional part of their plan not moving forward. That villain is Obama.

4. hatred of corporations.
that's a big thing with the progressive movement. Of course most of the corporation-hating progressives work for corporations or are supported by someone who does. Even if that isn't accurate, they do business with corporations, probably every day, of their own free will even!

Corporations aren't evil. On the other hand, they shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want either.

Exactly, ne of the blaagh blaagh my candidate lost I'm not supporting him blogs, aka PUMAs did a poll of their demographics.

Rich connected white women. A very large percentage with degrees, very high salary median. So they were spoiled white women who could afford to allow the Republicans to fuck America and the World in the arse for another 4 years.

Far too many of will moan about how Obama is evil but they will not lift a finger to get a Senator elected.

5. Yes, it's about
them and their raging egos..just like the teabaggers..they think of themselves fondly and the country can go to hell if it didn't chose their candidate.

And the so left blogs are all about fattening their coffers from disingenuous red meat thrown around the internet for the suckers to consume.

Such as "Obama's throwing Dawn Johnsen to the wolves" ..or some such hysterical claptrap.

7. To a degree yes. You also have tons of greens and far lefties
that thought they could manipulate the Dems into following their politically unpopular opinions. In other words they figure help the Dems get in and then they figured the Dems would abandon the positions they ran on to follow the ideology of a small minority.

8. I have traveled this road before.. There is a goosing of the Democratic coalition aka Nader
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 01:31 PM by Peacetrain
to split the party so the republicans can take back office. If it works, than a couple of years later there will be the opps we did not see that coming from the disillusioned with what happened. And if you try an point out the obvious, they think you are trying to shut down discussion. That is part of the goosing.

It does not take a huge movement.. it really doesn't.. I knew four people who voted for Nader because they were so angry at Clinton. Trying to explain to them, what the outcome would be if enough votes were drained, just fell on deaf ears. Anger overcame good sense and even self preservation.

Been here before.

Edit to add..

These were not far lefties.. just people who let emotions overrun their politics.

10. I firmly believe some do ...

Anarchists, or more correctly nihilists, are over-represented on DU. The goal here isn't to fix the system or even work within it. The goal is to destroy it. And then, magically, everything will be better.

"The system" refers to many things and changes depending on who or what subject we're talking about. Very few, in my admittedly unscientific observations, have a coherent ideology backing their desires. They don't have something else in mind. They just want it all to come crumbling down, Fight Club style, in a giant heap of rubble.

And then they will have "won."

We saw this clearly September - December of 2008 and in the early months after Obama's inauguration. I realized then this small, but loud contingent was going to dominate the discourse here and would bring the ignorant and incurious along for the ride. The issue then was "the bailout" and the stimulus. There were, and are, various rational positions on these issues that allow for assent and dissent, but the only expressed goal of far too many was simply "let it burn."

Oh yeah? And then what?

I think far too many people in the country have been affected by what some call the Disney-fi-cation of every conceivable problem. It's also the sit-com model of problem resolution. All problems reach a climax, and no matter what happens during that climax, whether it be blowing up every financial institution in the world or an argument between a parent and a child about whether those clothes are appropriate to wear in public, everything has a happy, tightly wrapped ending where all the consequences of everything that's happened previously are simply ignored.

For some, letting, even helping, Sarah Palin get elected is a goal unto itself. It's the "AHA!" moment of high drama and comedy that, in the Disney-fied world, rapidly leads to the resolution at the end where some hero sails off into the sunset with the world having been transformed by their unequivocal realization that they were wrong, wrong, wrong, and all it took for them to see it was to have that fool take high office. Then they all understood, and then they bowed down and thanked all the nihilists for bringing on all the destruction because it let them see the error of their ways.

15. When I read your post, it was the first thing I thought of..
I read the Vincent Bugliosi book, and that is what they tried to do.. start a riot among citizens, and then they (the Manson clan) were going to come in and rule the country. So off the charts delusional that you would not think college educated people would fall for stuff like that.

But they did.

17. And that is the scary thing ...

Education by itself isn't a hedge against this sort of thinking.

Nihilism is seductive, especially when you're angry, and the eight years prior to Obama's election made us all very, very angry.

19. that was all very well said. nader, the ultimate nihilist
is quoted as saying that things must get worse before they get better in an article recently posted in gd. are the people falling for that shit too young to remember nader's role in the catastrophic 2000 election? are these people die hard nader fans from back then and refuse to accept responsibility? to fall for this crap you have to actually believe that al gore would have been just like bush as president. not a dime's worth of difference is what ralph told us and enough gullible but probably well meaning progressives bought it.
