The CBS poll being discussed.
I didn't see much of a difference between the two in regards to Dem support for President Obama. Republican approval for Obama is about the same too. The difference, if I recall correctly as I didn't write down notes, is in Independent support.

1. What did it say
I have a question about the MSM Polls...

Are these professional polls or are they the ones that we check in on their home page.

If that is so, how do they know how we are leaning?

I don't really trust any polls.

3. If you look at the CBS poll a number of things jump out

first it only has 1/3 of the respondents that the gallup poll does

second no professional polling company is identified

third it states that its weight for respondents is 25% Rep only 30% Dem and 45% Independent, that mixture will drag down Obama's numbers and if you adjust for that one error you find the numbers the same as gallup.

5. While it's never good when Independents go down....
... the mere fact that the CBS poll has him going down a bit and all of the others have him going up a bit shows this one may have some problems.

6. True, but ...

Independents are always more volatile, meaning it's hard to define a genuine trend based what independents do from day to day. What independents do over time is another thing, but then again, independents tend to be independent because they're rarely supportive of anything for long. You worry about them during elections more as the election approaches, but eight months out, the only thing you can really do is figure a high/low barrier and hope the average is somewhere closer to high.

Plus, with the larger DU world screaming about a revolt among the "base," whatever that means, noting that liberals are fairly steadily high puts the lie to that.

11. "Independents"
I find that some independents are really Republicans who are ashamed to be associated with Bush and Cheney, publicly that is.

12. Yeah ...

When I hear "independent" I think "lukewarm populist who votes for whoever has the best marketing campaign," which, unfortunately, tends to be Republicans. I know that's not always the case, and perhaps I'm being unfair in working from that presumption, but in my personal experience, it's held true.

So, if they're dissatisfied with something, I take it pretty much par for the course.
