Now I am a little embarrassed .. maybe a lot embarrassed.
I have been talking about DU for quite a while and today during lunch some of my co workers who are like minded, decided to come in here and check it out.

I guess I have had a few people on ignore, and have just gotten to the point where I overlook some posters..

But my co workers who are fairly liberal.. thought I had jumped the shark so to speak..

Uhhhh, word of caution.. before you promote the site to your friends and family.. check out what is being posted that day.. sheesh..

1. How did they think you had jumped the shark?
Or is it the lunatic posters?

3. It smells funny in GD today.
I think it's all the incense being burned at the altar of the little gnome and FDL.

14. It is orchestrated over there
They must be busy at night planning their new tactics -- that seem to be working.

21. Some people are being reeled in
by the new tactics. I call it the apology tour. I have a lot of skepticism. I just read a thread
about DADT and the same negative posts appear. :banghead:

5. I've already told my friends who
have known about DU over the years that it's different now and not in a good way. I've told them about the BOG..so if they ever log on they'll know where to go for kindred Spirits who are progressive.

9. Democratic Undermine is a huge embarrassment
I truly hate saying that, too. But it is.

My only hope is that I'm right and the riff raff represents only a small percentage of liberals. I still don't know what the administration here is thinking.

Well, except my GF who posts here too - though she has been mostly scared away from this place by the crazies in GD.

17. My bf was served pizza...
After questioning... and was told he didn't break the rules but was going to be suspended for a while, and then busted his teeth on a pizza...

I really hate the ol' "put your hands up, or I'll shoot" routine when the person standing there with hands in the air gets shot anyway.

18. What!?
Why on Earth would anyone get suspended for not breaking the rules?

That doesn't make any sense..can't he take it to a higher court?

I'm sorry..it sounds unfair. Weird even.

30. Not fast enough, for my taste. Some of these newbies who've
managed to rack up a thousand posts are a TRIP! And dumb as hell! Just shouting down anything positive and building up the negative. Their sole purpose is to disrupt and flame.

12. Show them the secret sub-forum
"Why are there sub-forums dedicated to insulting posters who don't agree with us and planning the next attack on OPs with different beliefs?"

I call it secret because I don't know of any sub-forum where that is actually taking place but my guess is that the poster was talking about this sub-forum.

15. Oh, I don't promote this site at all ...

I tried that some time ago, and I got nothing but harassment for it.

Hell, my therapist has told me more than once that this place is toxic and destructive to my mental health.

When I do mention DU these days, I just mention "this political forum" I frequent.

to begin with to ever tell anybody I post here.

I have a feeling that if I had a therapist, he/she would forbid me from posting here.

It's rather nerve-jangling.

20. Embarrassment is completely understandable
but those who should be embarrassed are the ones who've turned this site into an open sewer. I wondered if any of the 300+ people responsible for what's currently at the top of the Greatest Page feel any embarrassment. What am I saying? Of course they don't.

I am embarrassed to call myself a liberal because of DU. It certainly is out of the mainstream of even liberalism, isn't it?

28. Yes ...
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 10:04 PM by RoyGBiv
It is.

All my life, here in the real world, I've hung out with a fairly liberal bunch of folks. Many have been ardent activists. Just in college, I had a professor friend who was *in* Chicago in '68 and had the literal scars to show for it. I was a part of the organizing committee for a student group put together because certain professors were being targeted by the local Baptist church, one of whom had a son who had been beaten to a pulp (in the NAME OF JESUS!) by the son of a preacher. I was one of four guys to join what was commonly called a "militant feminist group" on campus, and I ran with one of the founders of a regional group modeled on AIM. This was in a conservative town in a conservative state. The people involved in these groups were *hardcore* with their politics and worked with an "under-siege" mentality.

None of them were as bizarre as some of the crap I see here on a daily basis, and most of them would (and some, I can say since I'm still on touch with them, do) simply laugh at some of the expressions of outrage around here.

OnEdit: verb tense

29. Six or seven years ago
...I told anyone who would listen.

I'm anything but proud of the place now. Open calls to vote Democrats out of office, to say nothing of the vitriol spewed at Obama.

I thought that Kucinich thread, where everyone agreed the teabaggers had some points to make was as bad as it could get. Not even the worst by the end of the day.

31. It's the old 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' business.
Obama, in their mind, is now the enemy. So they'll start agreeing with idiot right-wingers. Use their talking points.

I saw it on DU with Ahmadinejad a few years ago (2005ish). Since he was so anti-Bush, DUers bought into what he was saying. Some even defending his asinine quotes as being 'out of context'. Embarrassing.
