People aren't even fact checking anymore. An article is posted about the Rhode Island school issue
It claims Obama praised a school that had worse statistics than the school where the teachers were fired.

That would be surprising, except that the data from the article appears to be completely wrong.

Here is the proficiency data from the school itself: http://www.themetschool.org/Metcenter/Facts_and_Data.html

It's quite a different picture from the one claimed in the article.

Sad, really that people don't question un-sourced data anymore.

1. No, as long as it's negative
President Obama..the froth starts flying.

And, we have an interloper in our BOG who won't adhere to the rules.

2. Whenever I post an article I always check the facts and dig deeper to get to the truth
roughly once a week I will come across a story with a great headline that I am all excited to post, only to find that when I read the article and follow the fact trail it comes up short. It's shame others don't do the same. To me once you post a bad article or two you reputation is shot. I guess DU is so big that one can get away with sloppy posting.

4. The insanity over this RI school case is mind boggling
since Healthcare is on the march the diversionary tactics are in full swing with the teeth gnashing over this failed school.

6. Uzy, I swear I'm not stalking you but I've been "+10'ing" damn never every one
of your posts lately! You are on fire!

since Healthcare is on the march the diversionary tactics are in full swing with the teeth gnashing over this failed school.

+10!!! Every day, when I think this place can't get more ridiculous and stupid, there is something else.

The Rhode Island school issue is an interesting and compelling one, but it just strikes me as SO DAMN ODD that the same folks frothing over health care, over the wars, over the bank bailout, over Obama's Nobel Prize are now just ALLLL fired up over this issue since the others have calmed down or even seem to be going moderately well right now. It's really unbelievable.

20. So much fun to come back
and see an innocuous post deleted. I wish I knew why so I wouldn't do it again.

14. If I didn't know better, I'd think Arne Duncan and Obama
had personally fired every single one of the teachers, then gone to their houses and pissed in their cornflakes.

8. Well, I've got egg on my face, and I accept that. I was the one that didn't look hard enough
and I admitted it in that thread. The data from the school website is from 2006 and is not the same kind of data that was talked about in the article. I stand corrected and am a hypocrite for not looking more carefully at the data I found.

9. Education is a very weird issue to cover politically.
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 09:07 AM by Nicholas D Wolfwood
Mostly because the "conservatives" are actually the unions on this issue and further because education is a trans-partisan issue (a term I use because people will join to support or oppose things from both sides of the aisle, albeit for different reasons usually). The union part of it especially makes it very confusing for people that, well, don't do a whole lot of heavy thinking (we have our proper portion on the left too, unfortunately) and just follow whatever unions say on anything because, frankly, they're usually on the proper side of things from the progressive standpoint.

From the media on the other hand, the lack of fact checking is indeed astounding. They don't even bother.

On edit: I say this working as an education policy wonk.
