Luck of the Irish?

We went to a health care reform rally on St. Patrick's day. We marched down the street toward our Representative's office, and about halfway there noticed another crowd with signs coming toward us. Turns out they were also marching for health care! Anyway,
a few of us met with office staffers and asked that they convey our support; those who remained outside continued to chant, "If you vote for us, we'll vote for you!"




This afternoon Betsy Markey announced that she would vote for the present bill.

3. an addendum...

Being someone who is 'disabled by default' I was pleased to be one of the speakers at this event. Some view health care as a privilege, some insist that it is a right. In my opinion it is a requirement, no more right or privilege than breathing. This present bill is the opening of a door. It is a beginnning. With its passage we must keep moving, keep pushing to make it better. It isn't complete. Yet. It doesn't help everyone. Yet. This is where we start. The important thing is, we HAVE begun.

I think this is a real example of democracy in action. Real constituents at the right time, letting their representative know they had support.

I agree, I think this is a start that will get tweaked along the way, and probably eventually completely overhauled into single payer. But this is how we do things in this country, incremental baby steps that lead to massive change over the long term.

Betsy Markey yesterday and pointed out the oped in her local conservative newspaper agreed with her after she said she was voting YES!
