Wow, what happened? I'm gone two days,
and this place implodes. I'm even afraid to venture into GD/P. :scared:

Sigh. This poor guy; what next?

13. That's what really gets me ...
Edited on Sun May-23-10 07:58 PM by RoyGBiv
How many people on this planet are there who are experts at deep-water drilling?

I spent an afternoon in the field with a roughneck relative once. I don't know shit about what he was doing. I just know he was working is ever loving ass off and made me feel like a fool for ever complaining about being tired after coming home from work from a desk job. Hell, even he didn't know much about what he was doing. He knew what his specific job was, and he did that well. He knew the lingo. He knew the basics. Of the Gulf disaster he has said only "This is a fucked up situation."

I know people are scared and angry, but I don't entirely understand this kind of reaction. Perhaps it's a vestige or different manifestation of millennialism. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE, and they're looking for a savior, and since the person they've chosen who should act like a savior hasn't put on the robe and crown of thorns yet, they're lashing out. Jesus Huessein Christ indeed.

16. I hear ya!
I saw the analogy brought up a few times yesterday that if you were being transported by ambulance attendants who you thought didn't know what they were doing, and were then in an accident, wouldn't you want them to treat you?

The response was often: I would just call another ambulance.

No one wants to acknowledge that in this situation, there just ISN'T another ambulance to call.

2. Same shit ...

...same damn smell.

I wish I could hide the Big Forums from the obvious lists. DU wouldn't be so bad if I could somehow block out the main forums.

I go elsewhere for rational discussion and news. DU as a whole is hopeless.

4. I give up
I tried, but after posting a postive post that linked to a postive DK diary and it was trashed, I'm done.

8. Have you noticed it comes in cycles?
It's like the Stock Market charts --- just when you think it can't get lower -- it does.

And they "Surprise!"

By some magic it gets better.
Now we have the Blame Obama for the Spill Campaign.

Pound ,pound, pound Obama.

Then like Magic, he pulls it out of the hat (he really has been working night and day on the issue) and it gets real silent.

Why would Obama not want to make the Oil go away!

That's the part I like!

11. Threads like that sink these days ...

Every singe time in the past few months I've posted something about Republicans or, most recently, Rand Paul, it sinks. I keep thinking it's just because I'm a nobody out there in GD land, but after watching it happen to others, I've realized that's not entirely it.

On thing is I don't use "fuck" enough and haven't to my knowledge called for a public hanging. Either will get you a lot of attention lately.

Then there's the other side of course. If the thread doesn't sink, it gets hijacked by negative nellies.

12. Its a very strange thing..
Up is down.. pink is purple.. None of it makes any sense.. There is as much animosity for Democrats in this arena as in any I have ever stumbled on..including FR.

14. I had a user name on Free Republic for about a year.
I sure did.

Used to go there and fight like hell with folks, particularly those who referred to Michelle Obama as "Moesha" and compared the Obama family to the Jeffersons because they were "moving on up."

Then one day I realized I hadn't been on Free Republic in FOREVER and it was because I was still having MULTIPLE brawls over the Obamas right here on DU. Sure, there are no references to the Obamas as The Jeffersons here, but the lies and bullshit said about the man on DU are every bit as odious and offensive to me as the crap I saw on FR.

It's the just the other (slightly less overtly racist) side of the same damn coin.

15. I saw one ...

Reference to the Obamas as the Jeffersons. This was awhile ago, and it was deleted, but it was there. Person who posted it is still posting, frequently, too.

I've also seen some Sanford and Son references.

We had a bit of a discussion about that little insanity over in the OpenSource forum.

Old hackers who have been around as long as some of us understand Jobs is a nut. He'd be more like Mussolini than FDR.

18. I just took a bath.
Seriously, I just spent part of Friday and all of Saturday immersed in Democrats at our state assembly. Lots of candidate activity, mountains of signage and campaign gear, parties, receptions, even a fundraiser to take advantage of Palin's visit to Denver (the Half-baked Alaska fundraiser with special cocktails like the "I can see a white Russian from my house"). Convention opened with a video of Democrats at every level doing good stuff, with deafening cheers at the snippet of Obama's swearing-in. I had some Obama buttons left and was giving them out, and I got several "can I have more than one?" and not one negative remark about the man. He was resoundingly cheered several times by the entire convention. I came home exhausted but reinvigorated.

That said, when I checked into DU this morning and started reading I scrolled up to the top of the page to make sure I hadn't somehow gotten into some weird timewarp. And given that the comments boards on even our funky local newspaper have been taken over by freepers who seem to live 24/7 at their keyboards, it shouldn't be beyond the realm of possibilty that they have counterparts on DU.

The posts that are most disturbing, though, are those by some DU stalwarts; in a couple of cases it seems to be that exposure to the unrelenting toxins deposited by deliberate disruptors has had unfortunate effect. Not wanting to be similarly poisoned I wimped out quite some time ago, choosing to have conversation in venues where the participants aren't here just for the sake of disruption. It finally got through my thick skull that some people aren't here to learn anything, that their purpose is not to build up but to demolish. To paraphrase an old dictum, "Never try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and the pig laughs at you for wasting your time."

So, I've signed on to work on a few campaigns. I'll be spending all kinds of time with Democrats every day. And for a bit of time each day I'll hang out with Democrats on DU, mostly in the BOG. It's like refusing to play tennis with the guy who likes to play with grenades instead of tennis balls; he can blow up his own damn court if he wants, but he can only wreck mine if I invite him to play.

Hi, BOG hunnees, I'm home!

20. Shove this post in the faces of GD/P. Seriously. I wish you would.
You aren't disparaging anyone, just noting what is going on. And you are doing something productive instead of whining.

Your choice, but thanks for this great post!

30. I love your very encouraging "on the ground" reports..
SilverSpurs!! I talked to people at my work today about the President 'cause there was some volunteer in the back spouting fauxsnooze points about him and I told them I wouldn't go back there while she was doing that. I said, "I love Obama and he and his Team are doing an amazing job considering all the lies and cheap shots swirling around him. One said, "I do too"..and the other one said, "I hear ya".

Something told me not to even go on the internet yesterday so I'm all refreshed.:)
