The late Rue McClanahan on Barack Obama
In a July 2008 interview, she weighed in on the 2008 Presidential campaigns. Regarding Barack Obama, she said:

“ This is the damnedest election I've ever lived through and Obama is the most amazing candidate I've ever bumped into. The man has unshakable integrity. He's the nearest thing to Lincoln we've seen. ”
—Rue McClanahan, Interview at Queerty.com<7>

I grew up watching her in the Golden Girls and I always thought she was a class act and an amazing person then and now. We've lost a great actress and a great progressive Democrat

RIP Rue McClanahan. You will be missed

1. I cannot believe how upset I get every single time one of my "girls" passes on
First Sophia, then Dorothy (by far my favorite character) and now Blanche.

I remember being in undergrad when the show was on and my roommate and I used to RACE back to our dorm room to catch The Golden Girls. Our friends couldn't understand why two black girls in their teens were so in love with these four old white women but I absolutely loved the show and got my roomie hooked. I don't think I missed an episode and I still watch reruns of the show to this day.

The fact that these women were so talented and also seemed so intelligent and open minded makes me love them more. That quote from Rue is wonderful.

4. I believe it was this show and these four women who showed
society that life wasn't over at 60 and just because you retired from a job doesn't mean you've retired from life. All of you ladies will be dearly missed and thank you. RIP.

5. I think you nailed it, Fire1
TV and movies and commercials are chock full of people in their teens and 20's, as if people of older ages don't exist. The Golden Girls, and especially the actresses in the show, demonstrated that life doesn't end when you hit 30, and that you can still be intelligent, funny, sexy, and sassy.

I love that show still!

7. I loved that woman ...

I had a great-aunt who said she knew her. My great-aunt said she knew a lot of people, but it was at least plausible that she knew Rue when she was young. Whatever the case, she always talked about her being a "down to earth" person who, despite her fame and fortune, never forgot where she came from and what she owed society for all the gifts she had been granted. She went a little overboard with some of her causes, but even so, she remained respectful, which allowed me to respect her even when I disagreed.

The Golden Girls had one of the finest collections of actors ever assembled in a sitcom, and she was an integral part of that. Thankfully we'll always have that part of her to visit now and again.

9. Interesting
She loved/admired Obama, but hated Kerry and quite sure Obama would disagree with her decision (no matter who you may have supported in 2003/2004) considering both men have integrity, something that is rare in politicians today.

Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but wonder if she and others that sat it out because a candidate wasn't their type or for their certain issue may have felt some remorse for watching Bush destroy this country for the next four years, if not eight years.

That being said, she was a good actress and liked her as Blanche in "The Golden Girls" and as Aunt Fran in "Mama's Family." She was funny and will be missed.

10. She had her reasons ...

I didn't agree with them at all and thought they were way over the top, sort of like killing the horse because it has fleas. But, those reasons were at least consistent with her personal philosophy and didn't just come up out of the aether.

Her tactic of dealing with it was rather bizarre, but then there were a lot of things in 2004 that were bizarre.

11. Say that again
PETA is over the top like that. It just sounds bizarre, but she was a good actress and funny.
