Increasingly, I am being driven into refuge in this topic forum
Maybe it's because I am not as Left as the rest of DU; maybe it's because I am not the miserable cynic that some people just love to be; or maybe it's because I realize that the problems Bush and Cheney left for this president will take many years (at least a decade) to resolve.

Some days...MOST days I can't bare to weed through the utter BS that passes as "discussion" on the rest of DU.

11. Exactly. It's like walking on eggshells over burning coals.
One doesn't dare misstep.

Marcus Aurelius recommended an analytical approach to life. Examine each thing objectively and determine its purpose, its worth. I extend that: of each action or inaction, one should determine the consequences. For as nothing can exist without a purpose or function, every decision has a consequence.

Was George W. Bush so long ago? Do they not see that we could even get a President who is worse than that? Next to Sarah Palin, Bush stands as an intellectual titan! Barack Obama is not the messiah the modern-day Pharisees mocked him as; he's just a man, albeit a very good one. Barack Obama is not the last son of Krypton, as he was further mocked to be. He's just a politician, although the most competent one we've seen in a long time. He cannot bring change on his own, but he never claimed he could. He said he would work for change, and he's been working his ass off.

There's a consequence to undermining the President. The consequence is that you'll get someone different in office, who could be better or worse. My thinking is, we can do - and have done - a lot worse. And further, before 2016 is over two conservatives in the Supreme Court will retire or likely die, and it is EXTREMELY important that they not be replaced by corporatists who creatively interpret the Constitution.

14. Yeah. I always type out replies and then don't even bother. I don't
really feel like engaging in childish back and forth. There was this thread last week or the week before that I replied a couple of times to, typed out an additional reply -- decided against posting it because I could see the endless nasty loop that was beginning -- went back TWO days later and saw that I was derided and "made fun of" for not replying by multiple individuals. People are just nasty.

7. I'm a lefty
Edited on Tue Jul-06-10 10:25 AM by ismnotwasm
And I know I'm not supposed to say this (I guess I'm not) but the constant criticism of Obama is starting to frighten me, the closer and closer we get to elections. Constructive criticisms is one thing. Assisting to elect Republicans with Obama hatred is another

My SIL, who is military and my daughter is ex-military both told me the other day the "Obama has signed a bill ended Veteran's preference for hiring" Well of course that's total bullshit, I researched it a bit, and it has to do with FCIP. There are activists requesting stronger language protecting Veterans' preference in hiring reform. I asked her where she got the information. Evidently it was one of those oh, so informative mass email sendings, this one from some idiot in the army.

That's exactly the type of misinformation I see around here sometimes.

It's ok to be a lefty, It's ok to be a Democrat, It's ok to be liberal, progressive or whatever. It's more than ok, it indicates politial sanity as far as I'm concerned. It's ok to constructively criticize the president. What's not ok, is to imply it's all over for Democrats, they've sold us out, no one has any real good intentions, Obama is anti-environmentalist, anti-human rights, pro-torture, anti education, anti-union blah, blah blah. If you read all the what Obama is against, he sounds like a fucked up Republican. Which he most certainly is not.

So I agree, I so glad this place is here

16. It's not just you. I think many Democrats have come to the conclusion..
that we may have to part ways with the extreme left. I honestly believe there's an anarchist ideology that has reared its ugly head, and I want no part of that. I'm convinced that they're just anti-government, doesn't matter which party's in control. We saw this in 2000, and I think we're seeing a resurgence.

The sad part is that they don't seem to mind being used as tools, witting or unwitting, of the rightwing. Just like the Greens in TX. They knew where the money was coming from, and kept quiet about it.

18. Regarding anarchy ...
It is quite odd that people whose ideology purports to place so much faith in government solutions express absolutely no support for government solutions.

It is, in other words, a form of anarchy. They just aren't entirely aware that's what they're advocating for some reason.

20. It's hopeless. They wouldn't know irony if it walked up and slapped them..
in the face. It's a bit unnerving to think that there are anti-government types in the Democratic party. Some of the stuff I'm seeing reminds me of Reagan's proclamation about government being the problem. If only they realized how they're enabling the right.

This forum is a good refuge, and I come here to find good news that would be buried elsewhere.

Thanks to all who visit and reply to OPs, but huge props to those who post OPs that are fun, or positive, or informative.

So that there's even more reason to visit.

Talk radio has now had Obama and the Dems in office "the past couple of years" and "Dems are in charge", etc. Forget the 8 years of destruction of Bush/Cheney. Yesterday I heard that Obama is suing Arizona so we won't think about jobs and unemployment. That's the latest meme.

I just got back from a family vacation in SW Missouri (my nephew got married in Branson) and the mindset there is unreal. I even had a guy at a gas station market blame Obama for cigarette taxes there. :puke:
He said that was the first bill he signed.

ETA: Congress passed the bill to expand state children's health insurance.

34. Part of the problem is another forum they use to plan...
what they are going to do, say, rec., or unrec. on DU. I have been feeling the same way as you and many others. I still believe our views are in the majority. It is just a well-thought out campaign to turn DU into a ultra-liberal, progressive (Or whatever they want to call it) forum, unaccepting of differing views. They want the big umbrella of the democratic party, and DU to disappear.
This rabid negativity is very familiar if you look across the aisle.
