the enthusiasm thing - need some help.

I admit that I really suck when it comes to reading graphs and charts, but how big of a deal is the Enthusiasm Gap according to this Public Policy Polling of TODAY? What does the Spread column mean?

The site says "There's been a ton of ink devoted this week to the motivation level of liberal Democrats and whether they're going to want to vote this year but our numbers suggest the party's real concern should be getting its moderate voters out to the polls."

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/

I like that the site breaks independents down into categories in so far as "For the most part conservative independents vote Republican and moderate independents vote Democratic..." But I'm just not seeing that big of gap in enthusiasm.

What do you see?

1. Thanks for the Chart, Kind of Blue..
I'm like you in the respect that they're not my thing but for those who like them(I know you're out there)..they should love it.

I'm a Progressive/Liberal/Pragmatic Dem. :) :hi:

based on data to me that's easy to refute or just "a feeling" that is really a wish. One thread yesterday was that young people and minorities are fed up and disapprove of the president, but just the opposite is true: Hispanics 60%, AA 90%, 18-29years at 56% tanks with those 30-45 at 38%, increases a little 65 and older to 44%, and more so with those 46-65 at 50%.

I really don't like indulging in futuring but one thread yesterday was the writing is on the wall that the president doesn't have the number to even consider running in 2012, but the opposite is true. The man is leading all possible Republican contenders. The numbers are all in the 40's, but he's beating them.

I've pointed those out in the threads and it's crickets. So unless I suck worse than I thought at reading the chart, the enthusiasm gap is not that big of a deal. Sheesh, even Boehner had to admit that taking the House is an uphill battle.

Right with you, Progressive/Liberal/Pragmatic Dem, heavy emphasis at this point on Pragmatic :hi:

on edit: the numbers are from PPP and statement from Boehner at CQ Politics.

5. The GOP/TeaParty/GrizzlyMamas Party
Always makes sure there is a wedge issue on the ballot and then pumps up their base with fear to get them to the ballot box.

I vote absentee every election and I vote. Why others stay home or don't vote is a mystery. To me it is part of being a responsible adult.

7. Me, Too, Born_A_Truman.
It can be a hardship for a lot of people. My husband and I volunteered in '08 to pick people up and take them to the polls and back home.

Other able bodies Dems who believe in punishing the party, well, you know, whatever. Just hoping between now and November the party seizes on the big fracture in the Republican Party to get left-leaning Independents to the polls.

6. What I get from this:

Moderates don't get as excited as everyone else.

Maybe that's why they're positioned between the extremes.
