"Obama: Social Security 'is not in crisis' "
"President Obama said Social Security is not in crisis and only modest changes are needed to keep it solvent.

The president acknowledged at a small town hall gathering in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday that the pension fund "has to be tweaked because the population is getting older" but said Republicans' plans to drastically overhaul the program are wrong.

"Social Security is not in crisis," Obama said. "We're going to have to make some modest adjustments in order to strengthen it."

Social Security has become a significant campaign issue during the August recess — Democrats have attacked the GOP, accusing them of wanting to privatize the Great Depression-era program. They cite Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) budget roadmap, which proposes raising the retirement age to 70 and cutting benefits for wealthy retirees.

In the past, the GOP has proposed putting some Social Security benefits in private accounts. But many Republicans have said they do not support the plan."

1. To kick the Fear Factor in the butt.
Fearmongers have an agenda not facts.

2. It continues to amaze me that the fear-mongering being done....
over the Social Security issue is being believed even here at DU! Thanks, Cha, for the OP actually quoting the President. It won't stop those who continue to promote fear for reasons known only to them but facts are facts, thank goodness!

3. I hear you, Cha. It's something how the GOP's idea of "fixing" something is to destroy it. -

4. I'm stocking up on cat food just to be on the safe side, including some kibble for texture.
The stuff inside those cans is a bit mushy for my taste.

For the love of pete.

How selfish of us Boomers to have ever been born after the privations of the Depression and the separations of WW II -- just because people were starting to feel optimistic and able to afford children again is just no excuse for us being here in such inordinate numbers.

Social Security was already tweaked to take care of the demographic bulge caused by the Boomers. WE paid more into it. IF Congress can keep its greedy paws off the account, we are going to be okay in that regard for the foreseeable future.

Yet all of the fear-mongering from the RW and now the LW as well has got both my 30-something kids convinced that there will be nothing left for them.

oy god

5. Best way to preserve Social Security? Jobs.
The "solvency date" for Social Security kept backing up during the Clinton years because there were so many people with jobs (and paying Social Security taxes) that the system kept getting healthier even though nothing was done to change the system.

6. Yes, and I'm betting
the Obama Admin knows this too.

It seems part of the bushcheney plan to destroy America involved tearing down SS along with the jobs so they could come in and rescue it with Wall Street..only it was Wall Street that needed rescuing.
