Poll question: Do you believe a national emergency resulting in the...
invocation of National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD51 and/or Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20 will occur before George W. Bush's term is scheduled to end?

------------------------------------------

On May 9, the White House issued a decree, entitled “Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20,” instituting a plan for responding to a “catastrophic emergency.”

In this directive, George W. Bush bestowed upon himself the authority to personally take control of the entire federal government -- including the judicial and legislative branches -- for the purpose of “ensuring constitutional government.”

Yes, that’s George “the Constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper” Bush we’re talking about. The same person who’s done more to dismantle the Bill of Rights, and our constitutionally mandated checks and balances, than anyone in history. This is the guy who’s going to ensure that our constitutional form of government endures by seizing control of it.

I swear, if George Orwell were alive, this BushCo crew would make him weep with envy at their machinations.

3. I almost threw in a "Not sure" choice...

...but decided not to because I thought people might be more likely to read the editorial, think on it, and form an opinion.

Just out of curiosity, how would you vote if you had to choose and stood to gain if you chose correctly? In other words, if you had to guess.

10. I can only think of two reasons to issue such directives...
1) As a necessary response to the societal dislocation and chaos resulting from an emergency severe enough and/or widespread enough to justify a massive, coordinated effort to restore normality through the most efficient use of any and all available federal resources. As an element of such a federal response, martial law is just another useful tool to help the feds restore order as quickly as possible. Martial law would only be invoked if absolutely necessary, on a limited geographic basis, with every concern and respect for individual and societal rights and liberties, and for not a second longer than necessary to achieve a full return to the rule of Constitutional government.

or...

2) The 22nd Amendment says BushCo has to leave the White House in January, 2009 and, having fought for at least half a century to put the executive branch in the hands of pure malevolent fascists and thieves whose only agenda is massive enrichment for themselves and for their corporate cronies, they have absolutely no intention of screwing up a good thing by complying with the law.

Realistically, which of these sounds more like BushCo behavior? And there's your answer.
