Sun Myung Moon front group in CT gets 80,000 in federal money
Sun Myung Moon front group in CT gets 80,000 in federal money for MLK day.

What an odd statement by Moon's son, Hyun Jin Moon.

Mooning Martin Luther King Jr.

Claiming credit for King's revered status, Sun Myung Moon front group gets $80,000 in federal money to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day.

"In terms of interracial issues in the nation of America once again, you talk about the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. The one who has actually brought Martin Luther King, a figurehead among the black community within the United States; it has been my father's work that's really raised Martin Luther King on the national level, to be respected nationally. So in the realm of interracial, you have to talk about the Rev. Sun Myung Moon." -- Hyun Jin Moon, January 13, 2007

Here is the group that got the money.
http://www.serviceforpeace.org/

CT state Senator Bill Finch tried to warn that this was a front group. Some of the responses he got were simply amazing. Federal money going to a group like that did not get a huge response apparently.

The Moon Organization is opening a new front group right here in Bridgeport. Service for Peace will locate in the Black Rock Arts Center. Perhaps you saw the CT Post article touting this group, which will be working to involve the area youth with their idealistic mission. Before you or your family members get involved check them out. My friend, Steve Hassan, author and self - described former "Moonie" keeps a web site where you can check out any group that sounds fishy or too good to be true. Steve's website is freedomofmind.com.

Many of the responses are posted and are amazing.

Here is a statement from a director of the Martin Luther King initiative in that area.

Diana Vaptzarova, the Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Initiative at Service for Peace in Bridgeport also responded and did not deny it:

"Last week, Service For Peace was one of six non-profit organizations nationwide to receive a federal grant totaling almost ¼ of a million over three years from the National Corporation for Community Service in support of projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

...."While organized religion is not my "cuppa tea" and I am not a member of the Unification Church or any other church, I believe people have different paths in their lives and I respect their choices. In fact, I find diversity of race, ethnicity, religion, etc. not only intriguing but also enriching.
At Service for Peace, when we choose our partners or employees, we do not discriminate on any basis, including that of religious affiliation. As a result we work with a diverse group of people from different ethnicities, races, religions and backgrounds."

Diana seems to be naive about Sun Myung Moon and his goals.

Here is the group which gives out the federal money. I typed in National Corporation for Community Service and got this website.

I was also surprised that Moon's group owned a college in CT.

Moon takeover of University of Bridgeport.

http://www.theness.com/articles.asp?id=60

No mention of this insidious cult’s ownership is in any of the institutions documentation. The result of the take-over is a gutting of the school’s credibility and a bastardization of its curriculum. They have introduced a series of pseudoscientific and alternative medical programs into the university, taking the lead in the encroachment of such unsubstantiated and dangerous programs which continue to grow and gain credibility within our higher educational system. Moreover, this now cult infused institution, continues to be accredited by the state. Still claiming to be non-sectarian, Bridgeport University has succumbed to the increasing wave of irrationality which threatens American education. In UB’s case, this incursion is made more odious by the fact that a cult is steering the course.

First chartered in 1947 (Schaffer, 52), UB once thrived, boasting over 9000 students. This sad shell of a university now has barely over 1200 full time enrollments.

A court ruling upheld the rights of the Unification Church against a board member trying to stop the sale.

Just after the cult’s take over, Ruth Cohen, a life trustee of the UB Board, brought suit against the university. She was claiming that the affiliation with the Unification Church was in violation of the school’s charter as a non-sectarian university. Further, that it defied regulations that a Board of a not-for profit educational institution must remain autonomous. The case went all the way to the Connecticut State Supreme Court, where it was dismissed for “lack of standing.” The Court ruled that Mrs. Cohen did not have standing to bring the suit because, while she was indeed a life trustee, she was not a voting trustee. This outrageous ruling was decried by Mrs. Cohen’s attorney, Michael Stratton. He believed the decision flew in the face of all logic and reason and may have been politically motivated. Mrs. Cohen’s husband, Herbert Cohen, a well respected philanthropist, was the Chairman of the Board for years, and after his death in 1983, Ruth was named a life trustee. If she doesn’t have standing, who does?

The Wikipedia reference to the Service for Peace group was totally edited clean, but I found something at Source Watch:

In March 2006, Americans United for Separation of Church and State reported that "Service for Peace does not openly proclaim its ties to Moon. Its Web site contains no references to the Unification Church or Moon. However, obscuring ties to Moon is a common practice for the organizations he runs, and the group’s ties to the Unification Church are clear." "According to publicly available records, " it continued, "the executive director of Service for Peace is Michael Balcomb, a long-time Moon operative, and the organization is frequently touted on Unification Web sites. Tax documents show that Service for Peace is affiliated with the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles, a Moon group for college students founded in 1984."

It bothers me they receive federal money. Our money.

1. These incidents should increase as religious fundamentalism continues its offensive against the...
barrier separating the church and the state. Already, cracks have appeared in the barrier.

11. And there seems to be little outrage.
Which means more cracks will be appearing.

2. Truth is stranger than fiction and
getting stranger all the time. It's quite insane that most of the American Press just totally ignore any mention of these things. You can't expect people to be outraged if they're kept ignorant of these things.

Someone needs to tell them they are wrong.

9. Moon Jr is not just batshit crazy; his syntax sounds like a parody of an...
Asian speaking English.

Yeah, I never knew that MLK was just some obscure figure until the illustrious Rev Moon shined the spotlight on him.

10. Service for Peace, Black Rock Art Center
Just found some links. A quarter million of federal money is no small thing.

Here is a link to the place where SFP is located.

http://www.blackrockcenter.org/

Here is the Service for Peace group with Wal Mart and Sam's Club for Community Service.

http://www.serviceforpeace.org/page.php?id=55

I was reading recently about a group called American Freedom Coalition which was sponsoring pro-war rallies during the first Iraq invasion. Recently I did find an inactive website still up but it linked to Libertarian causes. It is down now, but I did find this.

http://rightweb.irc-online.org/groupwatch/afc.php

I am still alarmed at the MLK spokeswoman above who did not even seem alarmed.

13. That BlackRock arts center is in suburban DC
the one in Bridgeport's Black Rock neighborhood, where I used to visit a progressive friend and her four cats :loveya: , is here:

http://www.internationalperformingarts.com

it appears to be struggling to get going, just like UB was struggling to stay afloat -- a prefect target for the Moonies. :grr:

You'd think after the True Father of All Mankind :sarcasm: served time at Danbury Federal Prison, he'd stay the hell out of Conn. :eyes:

15. You are right about their being vulnerable...struggling to stay afloat.
That would be a good time for Moon to make a move. These groups do so much good for communities, and it is sad to think that the influence could be there.

14. When do we start funding the Church of Scientology?
Or do we already?

They've already destroyed the tax base of Clearwater, buy buying up half of downtown and making it tax exempt.

20. There were many outcries and LTTE against it.
The school was in trouble and probably would of closed had not Moon spent his ill gotten money.

I think it would of been better to shutter the school. It is in a bad part of town anyway.
