I guess repubs don't like to be called unpatriotic by w. (peggy noonan on immigration bill)

The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said, "We're gonna tell the bigots to shut up." On Fox last weekend he vowed to "push back." Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff suggested opponents would prefer illegal immigrants be killed; Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said those who oppose the bill want "mass deportation." Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson said those who oppose the bill are "anti-immigrant" and suggested they suffer from "rage" and "national chauvinism."
-------

Why would they speak so insultingly, with such hostility, of opponents who are concerned citizens? And often, though not exclusively, concerned conservatives? It is odd, but it is of a piece with, or a variation on, the "Too bad" governing style. And it is one that has, day by day for at least the past three years, been tearing apart the conservative movement.
I suspect the White House and its allies have turned to name calling because they're defensive, and they're defensive because they know they have produced a big and indecipherable mess of a bill--one that is literally bigger than the Bible, though as someone noted last week, at least we actually had a few years to read the Bible. The White House and its supporters seem to be marshalling not facts but only sentiments, and self-aggrandizing ones at that. They make a call to emotions--this is, always and on every issue, the administration's default position--but not, I think, to seriously influence the debate.

---------How DARE the president (that I TWICE voted for) call ME unpatriotic!

1. Lamb Is Reading It On C-SPAN...The Shark Is Now Jumped
Every so often the Pegster grabs the wrong meds and actually writes something that makes sense.

It's fun to hear the Repugnicans who are all pointing fingers at each other...a great example of how a circular firing squad works. Each person has their own candidate and agenda...and, of course, that didn't fail, it was everything and everyone else.

Buyers remorse is such a bitch. But for all those who voted for this fukstick...especiallly in '04 after we all knew the Iraq war was based on a lie and was going bad...can all eat shit and die!!!

6. Straight Up...They Have Blood On Their Hands
Any brave soul that dares to mention he either voted for booooosh or supports him around me this day is likely to be called "immoral" and then told to go wash the blood of their hands. Lately I haven't had the chance to opportunity. Last night I was in a church in Central Illinois...surely everyone on that place hopped on a bus to vote for boooshie, but last night the last thing these people wanted to talk about was politics. Few cars in the parking lot had the "Save Our Troops" decal, either. But, trust me, these people aren't remorseful...they just feel used and want to go and sleep it off for a while.

Soon, I'll be back canvassing my area...one that was Ruby Red Repugnican when I first got here 25 years ago but now has turned Blue and finding those who claim to be Repugnicans is getting scarce. They all seem to like being "Independent". Kinda reminds me of the disenchanted on our side as well.

Cheers...

:hi:

10. Anyone else think she was put up to this?
I'm seeing an attempt to separate the "the White House and it's supporters" from rest of the Republican party, as though the last rubber stamp Congress never existed.

They haven't had much luck separating the two. I wonder if the immigration issue is being used again by the Administration, but this time as a wedge to help distance their own party members.

11. You're on to something there
This must be the beginning of the weak attempt to grab votes next year. "Look, we were victims too! Who knew?".

15. Eggzackly. To win in 2008, Bush (and only Bush) will be vilified for
a short while, and all the Pub unwashed dumbasses will vote republican AGAIN because it's OK, dontcha know, he's not Bush, and Bush is the one to blame for the past 8 disastrous years!! NOT the whole Repub Party!

And you know what? With this bunch of brain-dead cretins, it just might work.

"Bush can go pound sand. I supported that jerk at the protests in 2000 and then I campaigned for the SOB in 2004 only to have him turn around and call ME unpatriotic because I don’t support illegal immigration? F*** him."

"I just might change my handle to BushedOut!

At least with Clinton we knew he was the enemy from the start.

I am deathly tired of this administration."
