Why is everyone announcing so early?
Dean announced in June of 2003, Kerry in August, Edwards and Clark in September.

What is the deal with everyone announcing in JANUARY?
Do you think it's a sound strategy?

15. No, I read she picked this date back in December
because she wanted to announce ahead of the SOTU.

3. No.
I think it's the media hype that's causing them all to announce so early in search of funds, and unfortunately I think the money, the interest, and possibly the candidates themselves are going to flame out waaaaaaaay before the convention.

Unless of course, that means that Al Gore will step in on September 1st after the rest of 'em are all just cinders .... :applause:

4. It's gonna be billed as the "Contest of the Century"
Which Democratic candidate is going to get credit for fixing the mess that Bush the Lesser made in the White House?

5. In fact, Dean, Kerry, and Edwards made exploratory committees
as early as 2002 or at the beginning of 2003. They announced definitively at the date you give.

Clark, on the other way, entered in the race late.

9. So the point of the exploratory committee is to "explore"
your viability as a candidate to raise funds, etc.

So now the fashionable thing is to announce before the exploratory committee has done any work?

11. To my knowledge, only Edwards and Vilsack have announced
The other ones have started an exploratory committee. But the media do not make the difference.

14. Yes, but didn't Clinton say, "I'm in to win" in her webcast?

And I think Kucinich's announcement was definitive, too.

You may be right, and I'm happy to make the distinction.

10. Because of the bumped up primary/caucus calendar
There could be 5-10 states on Feb 5. Jan has 4 states.

13. I don't think that's it
They've bumped it up by 6-7 weeks is all, yet we have announcements a year before the first primary will be taking place.

I think it's more a race for the money/endorsements that's influencing them.

12. Because it is going to get ugly
Maybe they all figure get in early, let the swifties have their shots and it will all be old news by this time next year.

Hell; we are liable to forget who is in the race by this time next year.

16. A lot of the primary dates have been moved up
a few key ones in the south especially. By this time next year we'll have a pretty good idea who the candidate will be. Sorry, no link, it's been a while since I read that.

18. (1) No incumbent. (2) Half-dead vice president.
If you're running against a sitting president or vice president, jumping in early makes for a bigger hill to climb.

This time around, it's a free fer all.

20. Endorsements

Candidate A will remember the people who helped out right at the beginning. So a lot of people like to get their endorsements in early. Once someone has announced an endorsement for Candidate A, it's pretty tough switching to Candidate B latter in the game.

Consider Rahm Emanual. He is a former Clinton White House staffer from the same state as Obama. If only one of those two are running, that's who gets his endorsement. With both running neither gets his endorsement by default. So now Rahm can spend the next year hiding under a desk as he jokingly said he would do if both ran.
